Freelance Knowledge Management and Content Governance Consultant

Our client,  a mission-driven nonprofit organization seeking a freelance consultant with expertise in knowledge management and content governance to help us build a sustainable framework for managing institutional knowledge. This role will support our efforts to improve knowledge sharing, reduce duplication, and ensure that our content and resources are accessible, accurate, and maintained in alignment with industry best practices. This is a remote role. 20-25 hours a week, through the end of the year. Pay is 45-55/hr 

Key Responsibilities
• Assess current knowledge management practices and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Design and document a scalable governance framework tailored to the needs of a nonprofit, including roles, workflows, and decision-making protocols.
• Develop policies and standards for managing the content life cycle (creation, review, archiving, retirement).
• Recommend tools or platforms to support knowledge sharing and governance, with consideration for budget and accessibility.
• Create templates, guidelines, and training materials to support adoption and long-term sustainability.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure the framework aligns with organizational culture and values.
• Provide coaching and capacity-building support to staff on knowledge management best practices.
Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in knowledge management, content strategy, or information governance, preferably within nonprofit or mission-driven organizations.
• Strong understanding of content life cycle management; taxonomy development, application, and governance; metadata standards; and digital knowledge systems.
• Experience designing governance models and frameworks in collaborative, resource-conscious environments.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage cross-functional teams and build consensus.
• Experience leveraging Microsoft 365 tools to support content governance workflows.
• Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality outputs on time.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in editorial or content operations within a nonprofit or social impact context.
• Background in change management or organizational development.
• Background working with siloed departments.
• Certification in knowledge management (e.g., KM Institute, APQC) is a plus.
