Uber, Lyft’s free ride on benefits must end

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey recently joined a growing movement to stop the gig-economy assault on America's workers by filing a lawsuit against Uber and Lyft over the companies' misclassification of workers. As these companies continue to find creative ways to shirk their legal duties, we cannot forget the labor law violations they are committing. These companies have been misclassifying their workers as independent contractors for years to avoid paying traditional workplace benefits — including minimum wage, unemployment insurance, workers' compensation and paid sick leave — as well as federal payroll taxes. Like or not, they better wake up and realize change is coming.
