  • Be able to work on a W-2 basis.  C2C or 1099 is not permitted for this position
  • Be able to work the following schedule:  Friday – Tuesday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM

In this critical position, you will be the cornerstone of respect and compassion, ensuring that every patient’s final journey is handled with the utmost care and their families receive essential support. Your dedication will directly impact the peace of mind for countless families and the integrity of our healthcare services, creating a lasting legacy of care and empathy.

What You Will Do:

  • Support patients and their families with compassionate care, particularly in complex and sensitive cases of fetal demise and perinatal loss.
  • Serve as a vital part of the patient care team, offering expert guidance to patients, family members, and hospital staff regarding postmortem processes.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for families and associated parties concerning disposition and releases.
  • Consult with spiritual care services and refer families for grief support and religious/cultural needs.
  • Collaborate closely with families and staff to ensure that deceased patients’ unique preferences and cultural/religious practices are honored.
  • Obtain valid consent for autopsies and provide follow-up after examinations.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, law enforcement, and other relevant departments to ensure timely disposition with minimal liability.
  • Manage the disposition of all fetal remains when families elect for hospital disposition.
  • Coordinate patient transport teams to move patients to the morgue following their passing.
  • Oversee the morgue and physical remains, ensuring proper identification, accurate documentation (e.g., death certificates, medical records), and secure, temperature-controlled storage in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Facilitate autopsies and organ donation processes, acting as a liaison between pathology departments, autopsy teams, and organ procurement organizations, respecting patient and family wishes, and legal requirements.
  • Prepare deceased patients for viewing, ensuring they are presented in a dignified, respectful, and peaceful manner for their families and loved ones.
  • Determine next of kin and communicate effectively with families, acting as the sole point of contact for next steps and navigating funeral home selections.
  • Review all cases, providing pertinent and clear information to families, and offering consultation regarding autopsy, disposition, and social services.
  • Conduct thorough next of kin searches for patients without listed contacts, notify families of deaths as needed, and refer cases to appropriate county administration if no family is located.
  • Perform entry of death certificate records, ensuring accurate and timely completion.
  • Document timely and accurate information for complex case management.
  • Manage complex and sensitive case processes, communicating pertinent information to necessary stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison between mortuaries and our facilities.
  • Coordinate release of remains documentation, autopsy, and organ procurement holds.
  • Serve as a liaison with anatomical gift programs and research departments concerning tissue and specimen procurement for scientific research, based on opportunities and legal next-of-kin consent.
  • Provide “just in time” education for physicians, nursing staff, and families regarding cause of death and all aspects of inpatient deaths, acting as a subject matter expert.

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in a healthcare or bereavement setting.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Critical attention to detail.
  • Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze clinical data and medical records.
  • Ability to provide independent coordination and decision-making for all activities of a specified program.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience in funeral home, mortuary, or healthcare decedent care.
  • Previous experience in patient satisfaction/customer service.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/bereavement training.
  • Ability to navigate Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Electronic Death Registration System experience/certification.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
  • Funeral Director License.

The target hiring compensation range for this role is $53.04 – $57.69 an hour. Compensation is based on several factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, relevant certifications, and location.
