Job Responsibilities:

The Principal Planner will play a key role in supporting Senior Planners and Project Managers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, timely, and budget-conscious planning and design projects. This position focuses on both new and ongoing business development in the State of Ohio. The ideal candidate will be based in Columbus Ohio and have the flexibility to work remotely or from an office in the Columbus area.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead a variety of planning projects, providing innovative solutions to clients throughout the Midwest, especially local government units. Project types include zoning, form-based coding, master planning, economic development, placemaking, transportation, and more.
  • Represent clients in meetings with municipal boards, commissions, stakeholder groups, and professional organizations, without supervision.
  • Mentor and collaborate with other planners, sharing knowledge and assisting in the professional development of team members.
  • Oversee project management, ensuring smooth workflow, on-time delivery, and high-quality outcomes.
  • Contribute to company growth by handling tasks beyond routine duties, supporting the company’s long-term success.
  • Manage project budgets, providing status reports to management.
  • Lead potential client interviews and draft proposals to generate new business opportunities.
  • Build trust and credibility with clients and deliver visually compelling work products.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 5-7 years of professional experience in planning or design roles, in either municipal or private settings.
  • Professional certifications such as AICP, NCI, or related are advantageous.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively within a remote team, under the direction of leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience working with Zoning and Planning adminstrations for Municipal Clients
