Prop 22 passes in California

Gig companies can continue to evade employee benefits and labor laws.

JOHN CHUANG / CEO, AQUENT

California voters upended the state’s AB5 law, which was backed by the State Supreme Court. It had ordered companies like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash to reclassify their independent contractors as employees and offer them health insurance, overtime, sick time, workers comp, and other benefits that we’ve all decided workers need.  John H. Chuang, CEO of staffing company Aquent, called the vote “a setback in the fight to restore basic workplace protections for millions of Americans who are treated like second class citizens.”
