Job Description 
This key position reports to the Director of Public Affairs. 

The Public Affairs Specialist/Writer is responsible for writing and editing press releases, fact sheets, and website copy for the Office of Public Affairs. Working closely with subject-matter experts in the other divisions and offices of the Board, the Specialist also manages the review and approval process for these documents, and is instrumental in posting them on the website. 

Confidence in writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills is essential; expertise in use of AP style. 

The Specialist also writes creative, effective and accurate copy that helps reporters and the general public understand why audit issues are important to investors, public companies, academics and others. He/she strives to provide Plain English external communications. 

This job often requires managing multiple tasks simultaneously, including multiple document versions and tight deadlines to provide high quality, creative, accurate and consistent copy. Salary is commensurate with experience. 


• Provide expert writing, copyediting and proofreading (proofreading and copyediting tests will be given); 
• Write, edit, and manage press releases, fact sheets, Q&As, and other Public Affairs documents for Board review and publication; 
• Manage the public email distribution channel (MailChimp) for press releases and other public releases; 
• Participate in the website content management system, post new documents, and provide backup on social media; 
• Represent Office of Public Affairs at events where media may be present; 
• Work closely with Board members and senior staff in preparing press releases and related documents; 
• Update/maintain style guide on grammar, punctuation and word usage; 
• May work on media issues and coverage
• May work on communications strategy and tactics; 
• Maintain standards of confidentiality with respect to all matters and documents; 
• Exercise discretion and independent judgment on a daily basis; and, 
• Perform other duties and special projects, as needed. 
• Minimum of three to 10 years of progressive experience writing, copyediting, and proofreading in journalism, public affairs or media relations; 
• Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills; familiarity with AP style; 
• Maturity to deal with organizational leadership and senior managers on complex and sensitive matters; 
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral; clarity in speech and writing; 
• Ability to translate technical ideas into Plain English and creative writing; 
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently, meet deadlines, know when to seek help; 
• Federal government experience helpful.
