Visual Design Manager

In this role, you’ll coach your team on their projects from inception to launch enabling them to best meet user needs and business goals. You’ll identify and implement process improvements and design methodologies that will make the UX group more efficient and effective. You’ll mentor the visual designers on your team with the goal of enhancing their abilities, expanding possibilities of their designs, and helping them achieve a fulfilling career path. As a highly collaborative leader, the successful candidate will also work with leaders across the company in brand, product, engineering, marketing, Q/A, etc to ensure the vision for the user experience is realized. You’ll report to the Head of User Experience.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for people management – career development, performance, and coaching
• Create, as well as direct, other visual designers in the development of design deliverables that elevate, differentiate, and inspire
• Manage and ensure quality of the creative work produced by the visual design team; help designers produce superior creative work that meets business objectives, brand standards and usability best practices
• Have a clear understanding of roadmap priorities across the business and deliver on those priorities while maintaining the holistic vision
• Validate project scopes and staff projects with visual design resources as appropriate
• Effectively manage and assign priorities and workloads; forecast staffing needs
• Partner closely with Interaction Design Manager and UI Development Manager on patterns and standards work:
o Participate in substantial hands-on pattern design and documentation
o Ensure patterns are always current and up-to-date
o Provide regular pattern updates and rollouts to impacted teams
• Work closely with Head of UX to evangelize the power of end-to-end customer experiences that delight and execute on that vision
• Contribute to the methodology for our iterative, value-centered design processes that benefits both users and the business
• Review and approve creative for all product and technology projects to ensure a holistic approach to visual design across the site and mobile
• Stay informed on latest news, trends and developments associated with being a design professional and share learnings with team including leading internal UX workshop sessions as necessary
• Lead the effort to incorporate video into the site experience while also overseeing the style direction


Desired Leadership Skills
• Build and manage an outstanding team of visual designers that you’ll mentor to create world-class interfaces that support and reinforce our product vision, brand, and business objectives
• Introduce, develop, and ensure best design practices, processes and communicate quality expectations organizationally
• Demonstrate a command of design methods, tools, communication, and presentation skills
• Work with UX management to define the vision for the user experience and deliver that vision through the visual design framework; follow through with the communication, processes and tactics to implement the vision
• Collaborate closely with brand peers as a key strategic partner; understand their business objectives and help them to drive the business forward
• Build respect and credibility with stakeholders, management peers, direct reports, and executives

Requirements
• At least 3 years experience managing design teams and track record of building successful design teams
• At least 6 years of professional design experience
• BFA/BA/BS in graphic design or related field
• Excellent understanding of user experience design for the Web and mobile, technology trends, demonstrable design skills, and ability to show relevant work
• Strong leadership and people management skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in small and large groups, to all levels of the organization, as well as outside of the organization
• Proven ability to help designers create better designs and become better designers
• Strong skills in problem definition and user-needs analysis, including the ability to focus on the "right" problems to solve in order to advance of strategic goals
• Experience with Agile development processes preferred
• Experience with pattern standards & guidelines including accessibility preferred
• Strong CSS expertise
• Portfolio demonstrating superior design skills: design sensibility, ability to communicate visually, and solid design principles in general. Please indicate your specific roles and contributions for each project submitted as part of the portfolio
• Passion for simplifying designs and stripping out complexity
• Demonstrated ability to identify, hire and retain highly talented designers
• Experience with video production teams and video technology is a plus.
