User Experience Design Manager

The incumbent serves as User Experience (UX) Design Manager responsible for leading a team in carrying out a variety of assignments, projects, and services to meet program goals and objectives.

Aquent is searching for a senior UX candidate to serve as UX Design Manager and Information Architect/User Experience Designer for one of the most respected organizations in DC. Leads a variety of projects on web and interactive design to ensure the Museum’s digital assets enrich user experience and foster greater engagement. This includes planning, architecting and designing digital experiences forcommunications channels such as the Museum’s website(s),mobile applications, kiosks and other Museum digital engagement products. Partners across the organization to develop integrated engagement strategies and user experience designs that leverage a variety of digital channels, including but not limited to the Museum web site and its online and mobile extensions to communicate the Museum’s story and programs. Translates business and user experience requirements into functional definitions and interface designs.

In consultation and collaboration with the Director of Digital Engagement the incumbent develops and implements the broad and specific ideas put forth by the Integrated Marketing Communications Division, the Digital Engagement Branch and internal clients for the Museum’s integrated interactive products. Specifically:

• Analyzes existing and new content to determine site structure, organization, navigation systems, and layout. Aggregates content and document inventories and develops site diagrams and wire frames for Information Architecture planning. Works collaboratively across the Integrated Marketing Communications Division and with other offices to ensure site architecture and design is implemented according to specification.

• Serves as the Museum’s expert on digital user experience design for strategy, production and implementation. Leads digital project design efforts related to information architecture, interaction design and content presentation strategies. Advises on user testing efforts to ensure best practices protocols and outcomes.

• Studies and creates graphics designs and their components for Museum digital communications projects including websites, microsites and mobile applications and sites. Designs for both static and moving interfaces. Considers navigational architectures and content organization in addition to graphic design qualities of the project. Maintains existing designs and proposes improvements.

• Develops reports and other documents to make recommendations for the most appropriate approaches and technologies for the clients' digital interfaces.

• Works collaboratively with other Museum staff to insure that graphic treatments prepared for client projects are consistent and coherent.

• Performs research and teams with Museum subject matter experts to identify appropriate digital assets (e.g., photos, graphics, video, audio, etc.) from the Museum and other sources that may be incorporated into digital marcom projects.

• Considers digital platform palettes and best compression algorithms to create high-quality graphics while taking into account file sizes and target display devices.

• Remains current on the state-of-the-art technologies, graphic and information architecture techniques relevant to the delivery of organizational information and makes regular recommendations to colleagues on best practices and innovative UX solutions.

• Manages the clients' relationship with strategic partners and vendors working on digital experience programs.

As team leader, the incumbent performs the following duties:

• Ensures that the organization’s strategic plans, mission and vision are communicated to the team;

• identifies, distributes, and balances workload among employees;
• provides or arranges training for team members;
• monitors and reports on the progress of work, checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to ensure compliance with supervisor’s goals and objectives;
• serves as coach, facilitator and/or negotiator;
• maintains program and administrative reference materials and files, including preparing reports and maintaining records;
• represents the team members with supervisor and meetings;
• reports to the supervisor periodically on team and individual accomplishments and problems;
• reports to the team on progress in meeting deadlines and milestones for completion of assignments and projects.
• identifies and analyzes team performance to improve team effectiveness, efficiency and work products;
• communicates team recommendations;
• intercedes with the supervisor or behalf of team concerning performance issues/problems and/or to recommend/request actions, such as assignments, tour of duty changes, promotions, etc.

• Performs related duties as assigned.

Factor 1. Knowledge Required by the Position

Mastery of communications principles, methods, practices, and techniques to develop and evaluate communications projects to enhance understanding of the organization among special groups and the general public.

Mastery of the methods and techniques for creating electronic graphics for websites including a demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator or equivalent products; page layout, color, typography, and animation; designing Macromedia Flash and DHTML and related front-end programming languages; and designing fluid, flexible, and modular designs.

Broad and in-depth knowledge of Information Architecture and user-centered design principles; and skill in creating wireframes, sitemaps, content inventories, and interaction flow diagrams; and developing and executing usability tests to ensure usability validation.

Knowledge of, and experience with, digital design as it relates to institutional branding and identity.

Knowledge of web markup languages and other current digital technologies such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, and IOS and DROID UI standards.

Knowledge of database technology and approaches to be able to organize and make digital content searchable and accessible.

Skill in applying user experience concepts, methods, standards, and practices to provide expert technical advice, recommendations, and guidance sufficient to design, develop digital engagement programs that meet the clients' requirements for interactive services.

Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of management on technical and complex subjects.
