UX Designer (Visual & Digital)

As a UX Designer on the Set Top Box User Experience Team you will be responsible for defining, designing and implementing features on the set top box and other peripheral devices. This position reports to a Design Director and requires close collaboration with Engineering and Product Management teams, in addition to fellow designers and user researchers across the organization.

Job Duties & Requirements
• User Experience: Partner with business, product and engineering leaders to develop quality user-centered solutions for DIRECTV set top box and LifeShield device interfaces. Brainstorm and collaborate with other UX designers and engineers on multiple projects. Collaboration and coordination with teams responsible for the online and mobile experiences is a must, so strong organization and communication skills are a must.
• Documentation: Create briefs, user scenarios, sketches and storyboards, text strings, flow charts, annotated wireframes, comps and any other documentation that define the user experience. Includes providing direction to technical writers creating specification documents and approving the final specs.
• Deliverable & Deadline Management: Create clean, comprehensive deliverables and work with the Design Director to ensure expectations and deadlines are met.
• Research Participation: Support creation of usability and focus group test plans, partnering with our user research personnel. Develop, or support the development of user interface prototypes for research; ranging in fidelity from paper prototypes to fully interactive prototypes, as appropriate.
• Software Development Support: Partner with engineers during various stages of the product development lifecycle. Review software builds to ensure quality execution, identify and resolve issues, and manage relevant updates to specifications, as needed.
• Work hours, location and travel: Hours are 9am to 6pm in El Segundo, CA offices, with occasional long hours, as needed. Selective travel may be required to Philadelphia, New York or other US locations, as project needs demand.

• Problem solving: Assess and determine product goals, understand technical or business limitations, explore and ideate multiple design solutions, partner with Design Director and engineering counterparts to assess feasibility, articulate pros/cons and make recommendations.
• Collaboration: Work effectively within and across teams that include a diverse set of personality types and cultural backgrounds. Contribute productively and respectfully to debates, representing our customer’s experience and the design team’s objectives.
• Communication: Crystal clarity in speech and writing, with the ability to present to a variety of audiences (ex: engineers, managers, executives)
• Initiative: Lead and execute projects, anticipate challenges, meet deadlines, and manage time. Be a self-starter.
• Receptivity: Able to learn quickly and apply new knowledge adeptly. Open to discussion and debate while retaining a point-of-view.
• Agility: Excels working in a fast-paced and fluid environment.

Required Knowledge & Experience
• Degree in information architecture, interaction design or UX
• Experience applying visual stylings
• Minimum 3 years experience in user-centered design, user requirements analysis and usability testing.
• Online portfolio required, demonstrating:
o Exceptional web, mobile (iOS, Android), consumer electronics or similar entertainment product design that is well-thought out and of high quality
o Examples of cross-platform design that demonstrates the ability to account for considerations across multiple devices or screens
o Ability to write accurate, clear, concise and thorough specification documents that ensure optimal implementation
o Experience designing innovative solutions for the TV (10’ Design) or deep knowledge of iOS or Android applications a plus
• Software proficiency
o Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Acrobat
o Omnigraffle, Axure
o Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Visio

Experience working on product design is preferred to someone who has just done the marketing for a product
