Our client based in Welwyn Garden City (25 minutes from Kings Cross Station) is looking for a Technical Author on a contract basis for 6 months.

Job Summary:
A vital part of the Authoring group producing high quality technical documentation and training material for new-to-market products.

Working with a team of instructional designers and technical authors, the role requires subject matter expertise and the ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.

The team supports a worldwide audience of internal and external customers and responsibility resides in one or more of the following disciplines:
1. User documentation and training
2. Systems Administrator and Systems Analyst documentation and training
3. Sales training.
4. Procedure manuals.

Job Purpose:
As an instructional designer you will focus on the design, development and delivery of training, instruction and information for the following communities:
End-user customers
System administrators / Systems analysts
Product support specialists

With a customer-driven approach, your work will involve:
1. Collecting and collating product information from varied sources.
2. Writing and organizing the information accurately, clearly and concisely.
3. Publishing into the appropriate formats (hardcopy publications, CBT courses, on-line multimedia help and support programmes, instructor-led presentations, etc).

Main Accountabilities:
Design, development and authoring multimedia education deliverables for end users and product support specialists enabling the sale, installation, service and use of products. These include:
1. Hardcopy User Guides, Quick Start Guides, Installation Guides, System Administrator Guides.
2. Interactive multimedia training courses for users, system analysts, service community and salespersons.

Use of Quality Management processes to ensure high standards of information and presentation.

Establish and maintain communication with other internal departments, customer representatives, product developers and other analysts to ensure accuracy of information and customer satisfaction.

Research specifications to understand machine features.

Use of machine lab environment to understand features and test instructions.

Compliance with client standards, policies, processes and guidelines.

Preferred Candidate Requirements:
Proven experience and interest in writing user and support materials and/or training materials.
At least 1 year’s experience in area of specialism relevant to creating documentation: (e.g. customer support, sales, pre or post-sales analyst, CBT design/development, training course design/development).
Proven ability in authoring, copywriting/copyediting and/or multimedia skills.
Proven ability to understand and interpret functional descriptions.
Understanding of networking environments, product features such as scanning and email.

Excellent writing skills (reader analysis; document organisation; spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, word choice and usage; graphics).
Working knowledge of Desktop Publishing and Word Processing Tools and preferably a working knowledge of CBT and Internet Development Tools
Ideally have experience using industry standard graphics packages (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc).
Excellent Interpersonal Communication skills.
Demonstrates good verbal communication skills.
Demonstrates the ability to handle a variety of tasks/problems.
Demonstrates the ability to effectively work within a cross-functional project team.
Seen to be well prepared, organized and punctual.
Clean driving license desirable but not essential.
Willingness for occasional foreign travel.
