Excellent opportunity to join a growing agency in Portland as their Photo/ Video Studio Director. The Studio Director is responsible for leading, nurturing and growing the photography studio, both in its current state and its future potential state. You will help define the studio’s future and execute to that plan. The Studio Director will also partner with the executive team and client services teams to drive studio revenue, while managing costs to ensure the highest profitability for the agency. The Studio Manager is responsible for cultivating cross-departmental collaboration and synergies, especially as it relates to the synergies between photo, design, color and pre-media. As the studio leader, you are also responsible for mentoring and growing the internal studio team, building a rolodex of qualified external resources, as well as developing systems and methodologies that fuel greater success for the studio.

To accomplish this, you must foster partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders and provide a positive and informative experience that helps elevate the agency's design and marketing services. This person will professionally represent the agency, their capabilities, and their values while successfully collaborating with internal and external partners to meet all of their internal/external clients’ needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the studio business, and partner with the agency's executive team and CS/NBD teams to hit revenue and margin goals for the studio
  • Be accountable for studio profitability; identify and execute on cost saving opportunities, and help drive revenue (partnering with CCO)
  • Ensure the agency's Client Services and NBD teams have the resources and knowledge they need to sell studio capabilities
  • Participate in NBD/CS pitches specific to the studio as necessary
  • Develop strong relationships with studio clients, and engage with prospects as they tour the agency
  • Participate in weekly profitability meetings
  • Proactively solve problems at all levels, utilizing various leadership and negotiation skills, offering solutions for the benefit of the agency and their clients
  • Understand and manage to all the agency's policies and procedures, consistently adhering to the agency's administrative responsibilities including expense reports, forecasting and accounts receivables
  • Develop and execute against a go-forward strategy for the studio in partnership with the executive team
  • Thoroughly understand the agency's current studio business, current photography/video studio trends, and growth opportunities
  • Define the business strategy for studio sustainability as well as growth (ie. help define path to content development strategy and the studio’s role, including videography); define 1-3-5 yr plans and the tactics to get there
  • Identify business gaps, validate needs, secure resources and execute
  • Help develop and execute against a go-to-market strategy for the studio
  • Organize, manage, and nurture the studio team – both internal employees and contractors
  • Mentor, coach and grow internal team, including all hiring, training and development
  • Set quarterly individual and departmental goals and hold self/team accountable
  • Conduct annual performance reviews
  • Identify resource gaps, validate needs and execute
  • Build rolodex of qualified talent and ensure systems/tools are ready when needs arise
  • Develop / utilize systems and methodologies that fuel greater success for the studio
  • Evolve current and/or develop new SOPs and SLAs that are aligned with and support current/future studio needs
  • Effectively utilize the agency's ERP system (PACE) to track department/individual time/costs, estimate studio jobs, evaluate job/client profitability, as well as overall studio profitability
  • Learn and work within the agency's WMS and ProofHQ tools
  • Have a solid understanding of the agency's processes such as project initiation, budgeting, project workflow, open jobs and estimates
  • Identify system, process and/or tool gaps, validate resources and execute
  • Demonstrate an ability to change altitudes as needed, providing leadership at 30,000 feet but also rolling up sleeves and doing the work when required

  • Job Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Four year college degree, or equivalent in photography arts
  • 10+ years of relevant experience – subject matter expertise, strong understanding of photography studio operations, experience managing a business unit and leading teams
  • ‘On-the-box’ photography skills a plus but not required; business management/leadership and subject matter expertise are the main drivers for this position <\li>

  • Ability to travel as needed – less than 15% of time
