Sr Graphic Designer

The Senior-level Graphic or Digital Designer is responsible for the visual design and brand design management of increasingly complex, integrated multi-channel campaigns and customer experiences in support of campaign or business requirements. The role acts as a mentor to more junior members of the team with increased responsibility for leadership and direction of others, and often acts as a Lead on complex projects and may be a sub-group Lead (i.e. supervises 3 or more designers).

This level is the "branch point" from which individuals may progress in their career either as an expert individual to Principle Designer, or to people management as Design Manager. The role provides leadership and coordination across multiple concurrent projects with complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires both broad and in-depth evaluation of variable factors; exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results; is responsible for creating detailed schedules when given project assignments from Manager; leads large projects or campaigns and manages additional resources; is responsible for all schedules and work assignments; reviews adherence to and awareness of overall departmental and project goals, processes, schedules and standards; and coordinates and manages assigned projects to completion, i.e. leading the planning of project schedule and resources, estimates, recording and reporting of project status and metrics.

Principal Responsibilities

Is responsible for leading the integrity of the design on significant concurrent projects; plans, leads, organizes, controls and performs the conceptual and tactical design direction of an assignment; provides guidance and direction regarding design activity to other designers on aspects relating to the project; coordinates activity with internal customers, programmers and other designers aspects relating to the project.
Works on branding design systems, advertising campaigns and marketing communication work of assigned products.
Collaborates with peers, internal and external to the design group, on setting project direction and ensuring that execution meets our standards; evaluates projects on the basis of feasibility and risk; consults with business stakeholders who own initiatives to scope and plan projects.
Provides leadership to a group or project team; is generally responsible for overseeing one or more significant product campaigns or the front-end customer experience an entire product suite
Recommends hiring, promotions and other personnel actions to Design manager.
Trains new designers on specific assigned tasks; contributes to best practices guidelines for team use
Keeps abreast of global trend and design best practices and developments, and contributes to documentation and dissemination of best practices within the company.; incorporates trends and best practices within assignments as appropriate; drives improvements and changes in designs and gives professional appraisal on implementation of the design as planned and/or executed
Is responsible for detailed project communication to peers and the senior project team; informs managers and directors of project status, new developments and any issues or risks
Works closely with product marketing manager(s) to contribute to and advise on new product messaging, campaigns and Web sites; also coordinates with UI team members, engineers, Web site managers, designers and Web developers on related project matters
Prepares and delivers presentations at design-oriented events showcasing work that represents own expertise in a particular field
Establishes and maintains thorough and accurate documentation of all work; creates and/or oversees the creation of incremental design deliverables such as personas, experience architecture blueprints, site maps, wireframes, page flow diagrams, and visual design mockups, in addition to print deliverables such as style boards, template architecture, design systems and guidelines
Drives process to generate and understand user and business requirements; is generally responsible for directing and/or creating specifications, guidelines and visual language elements; sets or evaluates the photographic directions set by designers; manages the end-to-end process of selecting, negotiating, scheduling, executing and evaluating the finished work of photographic or illustrative suppliers
Frequently formally and informally presents design concepts and deliverables to design team and internal (and sometimes external) stakeholders; leads day-to-day internal and external design reviews and obtains approval to move projects forward and drive them to completion; may also present design concepts to senior management when needed
Works with User Experience Researchers to plan and coordinate user testing and customer research for major creative projects requiring insight or validation; prepares test print and digital prototypes for use in research; participates as an observer in user-experience research activities such as usability testing, site visits, focus groups, interviews or other research activities, taking notes and/or contributing to user experience research findings; provides solutions for identified issues; applies familiarity with user-centered design research methodologies and best practices
Works with manager to define group processes; works to implement and optimize process improvements; identifies process improvements and drives process changes that make the group more efficient and effective
Networks with programmers and other key contacts outside own area of expertise and other departments on technical matters and prototype designs
Champions user-centered design principles within Marketing and the company; may serve as the company’s graphic or digital design representative with customers, vendors or partners
Frequently provides feedback, design direction and project management within a project team
Facilitates and manages the process to understand user needs, business needs, and stakeholder requirements; works on graphic and digital design of the end-to-end customer experience, primarily in the awareness, acquisition and retention stages; this includes participating in analysis and conceptualization of proposed projects, utilizing professional experience in the application of specifications and design standards, as both a graphic and digital designer, and understanding of branding, design systems, usability principles and tactical best practices



Knowledge and Skills

Requires Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Design Strategy, Interaction Design or related field; equivalent relevant experience also acceptable
At least 8 years of progressively responsible design experience, plus significant internal experience with product development and user-centered design processes, and project management principles and tools; 6 years of work experience is required for individuals holding an MA/MS degree in one of the above fields; equivalent experience may be substituted for formal education
Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Dreamweaver, Flash, HTML, DHTML, CSS); front-end Web development proficiency associated with Web design templating and content design
Proven track record of success utilizing current marketing concepts as applied to the Web and print required
Highly effective written/verbal communication skills in communicating user-centered design principals and ideas, as well as presenting at internal and external meetings and events
Experience with promotion of best-practice Web usability guidelines required
Experience applying knowledge of information architecture, user interface essentials, interaction design, style guide creation and motion design to marketing materials
Proven experience originating new concepts or innovative approaches that have had significant impact on marketing efforts
Advanced knowledge of and experience applying design best practices and production techniques.
Proven project and team management skills of multidisciplinary teams
Recognizable as a specialist in multiple fields with the breadth of experience to lead others; a design leader in a group or team who advises on creative approach, scope, proper planning and design direction
