Senior Product Line Manager

Serve as category team leader over cross-functional product creation teams. Determine and identify new product and merchandising needs, trends and opportunities for the category. Drive the product process to achieve brand, department and category goals and objectives.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Develop product category road map/strategy on a global level by conducting, analyzing and interpreting global market trends and consumer research.

Create and implement category product line strategies which includes line structuring, pricing, product flow, product segmentation and product differentiation.

Act as category team leader and develop a collaborative working environment within the product creation teams.

Research, conceive and create new product ideas and initiatives. This includes developing and managing these ideas through the product process from the conceptual stage, design creation, development, launch and market rollout.

Write seasonal product briefs in accordance with brand, department and category strategy.

Ensure seamless interaction is established to deliver a product line that is designed, developed and manufactured to meet product requirements, market needs, margin goals and calendar timelines.

Present category strategy, prototype concepts, designs and product to key retailers, business unit meetings (BUM), and senior management in order to develop new product line offerings. Also required to present assigned category product lines to sales force and internal departments.

Manage and maintain the Product Development Matrix (PDM) seasonal line list for assigned lines and categories.

Develop and communicate category merchandising needs, including collateral sales tools such as catalog, components, hang tags, point of purchase (P.O.P), packaging and label/logo information.

Ensure that product timelines are met and that merchandising information is provided to appropriate departments in a timely manner.

Maintain positive open lines of communication with all management, merchandising staff, all other internal departments and outside suppliers in order to contribute to the smooth flow of information and efficient operation of the organization.

Job Scope:

This is a senior level position that works independently under minimal supervision. Work is checked or verified by meeting timelines and results. The job involves a high degree of detail and complexity and normally operates from established procedures, but includes new or unique work assignments. Decisions are made within specific company guidelines. Incumbent must be able to identify/evaluate problem areas and recommend effective solutions. Errors in judgement may adversely affect production or shipment of product and can ultimately result in the loss of sales.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Contacts are made with others both inside and outside the organization. Internal contacts include members of Design, Product development, Production, Merchandising and Planning departments. External contacts include Domestic and International sales management. Communications frequently contain confidential and/or sensitive information regarding corporate image and products.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has supervisory responsibilities, and is expected to mentor and provide direction to junior level positions.

Specific Job Skills:

Possess a strong understanding of the consumer, retail environment and competitive marketplace in relation to the Outdoor industry. Thorough knowledge of PC and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Communicate and interact effectively, both verbally and in writing is essential; includes the ability to express complex concepts and technical material in written format. Possess excellent presentation skills and experience with speaking to groups of varying size. Incumbent must be proactive and assertive in follow-through in addition to strong analytical and problem solving skills. Capable of working under pressure to meet strict timelines while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Incumbent must be a strong leader, communicator, and analytical thinker in addition to actively promoting a team environment to build team dynamics and relationships cross-functionally.


Bachelor’s degree in Business or related discipline or equivalent


10+ years experience in product line management and/or retail buying with 6 years focused experience in the athletic, outdoor or action sports industry.
