Senior Copy Writer (Marketing Background)

The Senior Copy Director will be a key member of the National Marketing Group who will help the in-house creative agency become an in-demand, best-in-class shop for a national leader in higher education and career services. He/she will partner with business unit clients and other National Marketing staff to develop and execute “big ideas” and advertising campaigns. This role will support the business units’ overall strategies by developing concepts, writing pithy, strategically-relevant copy and turning strategy into bold, compelling tactics intended to engage, attract and sell products and services across all marketing channels.

In this important role, the SCD will be responsible for ensuring that our solutions captivate the imagination of our SBUs and their target markets, that creative energy and innovation are fostered across the team, that the high quality of our work remains foremost, and that the team develops under his or her leadership.

The SCD will ideally have an agency background and will be able to lead campaigns as well as work with senior teams to brainstorm, lead, develop, critique and sign off on all creative work across multiple platforms and channels. The SCD will report to the Executive Director of Creative Services.

Key Responsibilties:

• Lead and manage a team of marketers in the strategic development and delivery of creative solutions that effectively convey the brand and strengthen customer engagement

• Establish and own every aspect of the big idea development process from initial concept to live implementation

• Mentor his/her team’s professional development by providing constructive critique and encouraging skill mastery

• Attract, recruit and retain creative marketing talent (in-house and freelance) across all creative disciplines (ideation and concepting, writing, development and execution.)

• Encourage team members to take risks with creative projects and defend them against challengers

• Constantly work to improve communications and processes necessary for optimum creative output

• Help inspire a culture of creation throughout the entire company


• Industry-leading conceptual and strategic thinker who can lead and navigate creative development with problem solving and outstanding communication skills

• Strong portfolio demonstrating a range of brand-building, digital-savvy, and relationship marketing executions

• Full command of the craft of advertising and promotional copywriting; able to develop fresh, engaging and well-structured headlines, body copy and calls to action as well as direct the work of others

• Strong relationship builder with the ability to listen to others; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues at all levels as well as external partners; ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple way and to tailor key messages and presentation styles to multiple audiences

• Strong editing and proofreading skills a must; impeccable spelling, grammar, punctuation

• Team leader who can delegate, develop and motivate a team to encourage a high level of ownership/accountability and productivity

• Proven ability to earn respect and credibility throughout an organization

• Voracious learner, highly imaginative and passionately curious about the world; up-to-date on all current marketing, creative and digital trends

• Process-oriented thinker who anticipates and thinks through business challenges

• Bright, high-energy, passionate individual with a strong work ethic

• Hands-on, self-directed, team-oriented, articulate, flexible and comfortable with candid, direct communication within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

• Advanced MS Office skills

• Bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or communications; MA/MFA preferred

• 5+ years of industry experience in a well-established leadership role with a proven track record of success managing marketing writers
