Scientific Technical Writer/Instructional Designer

Our client is looking to hire an Instructional Designer for a long-term contract position. This position will require application of instructional design theory and process to create a variety of learning solutions that improve business results. This person will be responsible for designing, developing, reviewing, and revising training content and performance qualification metrics. You will need to be able to effectively establish and sustain relationships with subject matter experts to solicit content; define and sequence the instructional content and strategies; and ensure training processes and tracking systems are performed consistently according to current client best practices and other applicable regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Utilize instructional design principles or models (e.g. ADDIE, DIDOV, Dick and d Carey, etc.) to manage the course development process for new and existing training content.
• Evaluate, recommend, and implement new instructional technologies, innovative instructional practices, and new course delivery methods.
• Create design documents that specify learning objectives, learning strategies, learning materials design specifications, measures of student learning, skill application and learning impact (e.g., business results)
• Design and develop materials to support both facilitators and participants in instructor-led and blended training programs taking account of adult learning principles
• Create storyboards, scripts and design course content (including simulations and blended solutions) and learner instructions for e-Learning solutions
• Design, develop, and author interactive and engaging instructional materials with assessments and simulations using a variety of tools and applications to include, audio, video, animation, narrated presentations, podcasts, webcasts, simulations, and virtual learning environments.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of learning solutions and use evaluation data to support the learning and development continuous improvement process
• Conduct periodic reviews of learning materials and use learner feedback to determine if quality guidelines and desired learning outcomes have been met.
• Follow established processes for designing and developing learning solutions, including use of electronic learning content development programs to manage design and development workflow.
• Consults with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify job tasks and knowledge/performance gaps.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of learning programs and makes future recommendations accordingly.
• Recommend designs and develop creative learning solutions that include, but are not limited to, classroom training, eLearning and blended learning solutions.
• Be a subject matter expert for the training department and give recommendations concerning course design, virtual learning environments, course management, and evaluation systems.
• Continuously assess and address the needs of training department staff to help improve the effectiveness of instruction; developing and maintain a collection of professional development resources on topics related to best practices in learning and development.
• Designs and develops print materials including participant/facilitator guides and job aids.
• Develops an effective instructional strategy/learning plan and design documents for each learning intervention based upon established learning objectives and the characteristics of a given target audience.
• Acts as liaison between third party developers.
• Track and trend training/qualification performance.
• Ensures high levels of customer service and satisfaction. Meets and strives to exceed customer expectations.
• Stays current with federal, state, local, and company-specific rules, regulations, and practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:
• Excellent writing, analysis, and instructional design skills
• Ability to quickly learn and organize complex content
• Ability to think outside the box to identify solutions
• Demonstrated experience in partnering with business/organizational leaders, learning consultants, and facilitators to translate business objectives into effective learning interventions
• Ability to effectively research, review and process technical information for training design purposes
• Ability to effectively organize work, prioritize and manage time in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in order to meet deadlines
• Aptitude to quickly adapt and learn new products and technologies
• Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of adult learning theories and instructional design principles and full knowledge of the ADDIE process
• Extensive knowledge of current and future instructional design technologies (to include e-learning, mobile learning, ILT, etc.)
• Knowledge of audio and video production methods and equipment.
• Demonstrated experience working with many instructional technology design tools (e.g. Photoshop, Articulate, Captivate, Pinnacle, etc.)
Prior experience in designing classroom, print and multimedia training

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in instructional design, adult learning, instructional technology, instructional systems, educational technology, or related field; master’s degree preferred. Minimum of two years experience in instructional design or instructional technology, and experience in all phases of instructional design (i.e. analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation).
