Research Assistant

As a Research Associate, you’re actively contributing to our research program and help us push the boundaries of understanding on hard problems at the intersection of technology and geopolitics. Self-direction, rigor, great organizational skills and the ability to pursue ambiguous questions are a must for this position. The role requires the ability to think creatively about research problems and to quickly summarize the state of understanding on complex questions. Over the course of the engagement, the Research Associate will be involved in multiple research projects spanning multiple issues in the “Internet & Society” sphere: cybersecurity practices for human rights activists, terrorist organizations’ propaganda strategies, repressive censorship, troll farms, DDoS attacks against journalists and news outlets, etc.

Top 3 Daily Responsibilities:
1.Creating clear and engaging slide presentations (and other digested forms) summarizing our research outputs for various audiences,
2. Conducting background research on a given topic, synthesizing large amounts of written (and other media) material from diverse sources in analytical briefs,
3. Reviewing and editing articles and report outlines,

Additional Responsibilities
- Engaging with various research partners on support needs related to ongoing projects (ex. external workshops, research labs, guests).

Required Qualifications
- BA or Master’s degree in digital humanities, Computer Science or related humanities field
- 2-3 years of experience in a Research Associate role
- Project management experience in a research capacity
- Proficiencies working and using Google docs specifically slides
- Excellent writing & editorial skills
- Autonomy, positive can-do attitude, a self-starter mindset
- Critical thinking: evaluating and contrasting multiple sources on a given topic
- Ability to spot relevant, original and unique ideas amidst large amounts of materials
- Proven ability to handle ambiguity & work collaboratively
