Our client is a major insurance company with offices all over the globe. They have asked for our assistance in identifying TWO proposal writers for a contract this summer.

In this contract position you will:

  • Be experienced with group insurance - Life / Dental / Disability (non-medical) for RFI/RFP. The proposals are for School Districts and Municipalities. This is very complex material which requires a very seasoned pro.

  • You will take existing content and scrub/manipulate/manage it to be compliant with standards. You will hand it off to a forefront writer who will complete the proposal. - MUST HAVE WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF QVIDIAN/KADIENT (proposal software tool).

    This position provides tactical execution of pre-sales support of written proposals and presentations. The overall role of this position is writing responses to Requests for Proposals, Requests for Information, etc. to attract and retain business in the mid to large market business segment and support of those sales growth objectives. Since these are strategic and complex in nature they require leadership and expertise in all aspects of proposal development - document, content strategy, design, layout and final delivery. This position is an integral part of the Request for Proposal team and all of the product lines will be covered. Key attributes of this position are to lead others without formal authority to develop winning proposals, as well as to understand the customer’s needs in business, sales and/or operationally and align the company response to meet those needs, bridge the gaps and use known buying influences to craft a proposal strategy and comprehensive offering into a cohesive response.

    Major Opportunities and Decisions:

    Working with minimal supervision in a fast paced time sensitive environment - this individual will be required to make an initial assessment of the opportunity, and working with Sales and Operations/Underwriting, develop and execute on strategy for response. The complexity of these require a well balanced, technically proficient and business savvy proposal professional who is motivated to work through the details knowing that every RFP is an opportunity for the growth of the organization. This will include driving the opportunity through the organization, making assignments and disseminate them to various individuals and departments as needed, lead proposal reviews and create a quality competitive response that complies with the requirements and incorporates appropriate themes, messaging, content, etc. Overall accountability for the creation of, editing, review, correct grammar and responsiveness to questions and requirements included within the proposal or sales document. This individual will be expected to craft compelling, strategic, and customized responses/deliverables.

    The successful individual will go beyond the usual course of business to support the organization’s expansion into new business channels, partnerships, b-to-b opportunities, and to support requests pertaining to Healthcare Reform and the evolving industry landscape. Proposal Managers may be tasked with responding to complex, non-standard, and ad hoc requests received by the Centralized Proposal Unit, with scope beyond traditional RFPs and RFQs. Such requests may include:

    • Requests for Information (RFIs – planholder, annual broker, etc.)
    • Specialty Markets RFPs, RFIs, and other partnership documents
    • Strategic Alliances RFPs, RFIs, etc.
    • State Insurance Exchange RFPs, RFIs, etc.
    • Finalist presentations – Assist and partner with Group Marketing

    Principal Accountabilities:
    Accountable for project managing the proposal process and workload. This includes making initial assessment of opportunity, develop and execute on strategy for response. Identify additional resources required, make assignments and track. Accountable for compiling, either through the content management databases or with subject matter input, the written responses to RFPs and presentations. This includes partnering with the Knowledgebase administrator in the writing and editing of questions and answers and for the assembly of the drafts and final responses. Coordinates with production for final print and distribution deliverables and required exhibits and attachments. Accountable for having a working knowledge of the Group Profit Center products and services.

    Responsible for partnering with group marketing, the market development organization, monitoring industry trade sources, the SBU’s, Sales, etc. to understand how Group’s products and services fit into the competitive landscape and then articulate it through RFP’s and presentations.


    Partner with Group Marketing, proposal writers, SBU’s and others to design and develop finalist presentations highlighting Guardian’s products and services. The individual will also be asked to contribute/assist in the compilation and writing of other business documents as needed for the organization

    Develop process of controls and workflow to contribute to, and coordinate with proposal writer/knowledgebase administrator to update the content library as new knowledge items are added from proposal completions as well as in response to new product launches/upgrades.

    Participate in cross functional training. Train and mentor Proposal Specialists and/or less senior or new Proposal Managers.


    Competencies/Skills:

    • Excellent use of the English language, strong writing skills and an ability to solve problems quickly in a fast paced environment.
    • Ability to effectively deal with individuals at all levels
    • Advanced knowledge of organizational resources and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
    • Ability to play a consultative role to Sales and offer strategic suggestions and experience-based insight
    • Excellent understanding of the customer and the buying influences

    Knowledge:

    • Strong strategic proposal experience – preferably in Group Benefits.
    • A keen understanding of the proposal development process
    • Excellence in interacting with sales organization’s methodologies and understanding of buying influences that win results.
    • Excellent experience in preparing RFP responses and/or project execution experience
    • Excellent skills with Microsoft office

    Education and Experiences

    BA or BS in Business communications / marketing.
    5-10 years of strategic proposal development – preferably in Group Benefits.
    Excellence in interacting with sales organizations and understanding sales cycles and methods
    A keen understanding of proposal development process and project execution experience
    Experience with Qvidian software a plus.******
    Experience with online proposal portals – ProposalTech, IBX, etc. – a plus.
    Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) accreditation desirable
