Materials Research Coordinator 

Start Date:  ASAP

Assignment Length:  2 Months (with opportunity to extend)

Location:  East Bay, CA



Provide technical support to the Materials Research Manager in the Materials Research department.  Responsible for data management and organization, maintenance, and retention of materials in the Fabric Library.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Creates PDM #’s and Vendor Parts as directed by Materials Research and Sourcing
  • Adds fabrics to the seasonal palette
  • Enters and proofs fabric specifications
  • Maintains seasonal fabric palette
  • Creates PDM management reports using query application
  • Follows up with liaison to ensure fabric specs and prices are updated in a timely manner
  • Monitors development and updates lifecycle in PDM to reflect most current status



  • Maintain new fabric development files for Materials Research Manager
  • Query fabric reports for Product Line Managers and other team members as needed
  • Archive approved fabrics in quality and samples files following CSC protocol
  • Manages and tracks the development of all Prints and Yarn Dyes from initiation to approval, interdepartmentally and in all systems
  • Initiates proto yardage requests and tracks in PDM system.  Follows up with liaison offices to monitor delivery and reports delays to Product Development and Design
  • Send swatches of all new materials to CSC Import Department during seasonal development calendar
  • Initiates requests for test yardage and track in PDM system.  Follows up with liaison offices to monitor delivery and reports delays to MR Analyst and Design
  • Completes Fabric Test Request Forms as directed by Materials Research Manager and submits information to the Materials Testing Lab
  • Tracks receipt of salesman sample yardage for Materials Research Manager.  Maintains log and follows up with liaison offices to ensure all fabrics are received in a timely manner.  Pulls Quality Sample files and submits salesman sample yardage to design and merchandising for review



  • Organizes and maintains fabric library.  Manages the receipt and rotation of new fabric samples, dispose/recycle obsolete
  • Creates displays as directed by Materials Research Manager.  Files loose samples, maintain Fabric Room free of clutter
  • Assists Designers and Materials Research Manager in researching and locating items in the Fabric Room Library


Fabric Testing:

  • General testing, down/fiber, UPF; Seam Seal Tape and Adhesives
  • Initiate communication (this function is detailed and can be expanded)
  • Follow up on test results (both approved and failed)
  • Communicate results to Material; Research Manager and Product Development
  • Record results in database



  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising or related field
  • 1 – 3 years related work experience in the apparel or textile industries
  • Working knowledge of textiles, attention to detail and strong communication skills
  • Possess knowledge of computer data entry, proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, report generations, and file maintenance techniques
  • Possess excellent organizational skills, self-starter, detail oriented
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to conduct/manage several tasks at one time
  • Mental ability to conduct interpersonal contact with company personnel at all levels as well as with outside vendors
  • Interest in developing knowledge about textiles and the garment production process is required
  • Physical ability to use telephone, computer hardware/software including keyboard, type, sit for extended periods of time, make repetitive hand/wrist movements, and occasionally lift/carry up to 20 lbs
  • May be required to work in excess of 8 hours per day and / or 40 hours per week during peak season
