Functional requirements gathering – very important. At times this may be primarily the designer’s responsibility, especially if they work best that way. The designer needs to be great at helping discover the difference between what’s asked for and what’s truly valuable.
User and Task Research – important skill that should be used as needed, but not looking for a dedicated researcher. Will work very closely in person with users and stakeholders.
Information Architecture – extremely important and probably a significant part of this role. Existing interfaces are built around the data model rather than the user’s information model, and have a big roadmap of future new features, so improving the user experience requires great information modeling that considers existing and future information.
Ideation – extremely important. This person will be a critical idea generator for how to solve problems and how to fit them into the current and future solutions.
Prototyping, Wire-framing – extremely important. This person will be the primary person creating wireframes and interactive prototypes when needed. This could also be a shared job with others if needed (likely only preliminary design ideas), looking for some experience that’ll help improve this process.
Usability testing – extremely important. Closing the loop with users to evaluate the design and the developed solution is a big gap today.
Visual Design – some chops would be nice to have, but this doesn’t need to be the main strength. A visual designer is in place that this role will team up with and is expected to play a strong role in defining the design guidelines.
Interaction Design – extremely important. They must be able to understand and bring together information, visual design, space use (wireframes, layout), user’s time in the system, and user response (behavior).
UI development – some required javascript/html/css experience, but don’t expect them to develop. A basic understanding of development concerns is necessary for communicating effectively with developers.

Important experience
2-3 years experience with interaction design, ideation, wire-framing, prototyping, information architecture.
1-2 years experience gathering functional requirements, conducting user research, interviewing users, and conducting usability testing.
Some experience doing web UI development, including as a full time developer role or for prototyping UX designs.
Designing web applications, especially data entry/management, not just marketing web sites
Working as part of the software development teams in the dev process, not just marketing, advertising, graphic design teams
Analytical thinker, devil’s advocate
Strategic thinker, visionary
User-centric approach, empathetic, patient
Works collaboratively towards best solution, takes criticism/feedback well
Sharp and clear communicator, both understanding people and being understood
UX student, thinker, thought and culture leader, passionate
