Interactive Designer

Our client is a premier ecommerce retailer located in the heart of San Francisco. They are looking for a ROCKSTAR interactive designer to come on board to help with a series of internal portals and external ecommerce sites. This candidate will wear many hats, juggle multiple projects and needs to THRIVE in a fast paced environment.

Position Overview

The UX Designer will work in partnership with one/several product managers to:

--Improve the features and functionality currently existing on the company sites
--Concept and bring to life new features and functionality for the websites and for internal tools, translating requirements into interface designs.
--Develop standards for user experience and share them with the organization.

There is currently one other UX Designer in the group and several external contractors. Each UX Designer will be assigned to specific projects but they will be expected and encouraged to collaborate at key points and to review each others work as appropriate. This role has no direct reports. The position reports to the Senior Dir. of Customer Experience, Product Management.

Major responsibilities:


--Simultaneously manage multiple projects each at different stages of design. Projects could range from concepting a new ecommerce site, to developing a new feature, to enhancing a current feature, to developing the UI for an internal website maintenance tool, to providing guidance on interaction for marketing content.
--Be able to develop interaction experiences for a range of devices, from a desktop computer, to a mobile phone, to a tablet device to a point of sale system.
--Work hand-in-hand with one or several product managers to understand key user needs and business goals. Create user experience designs that meet the needs of both users and the business.
--Working in partnership with product management and key business stakeholders, iterate, refine, and ultimately finalize these designs.
--Communicate concepts within the organization to a variety of audiences, from executives to software developers, through means such as: storyboards, conceptual diagrams, interaction flows, wireframes, and ultimately detailed functional specifications.
--Partner with product management and consumer insights (our internal customer research group) to user-test concepts as needed. Contribute to the testing effort by planning testing cases, working with the development team and visual designers to build prototypes, observing customers, analyzing user testing results, and presenting recommendations.
--When the concept is close-to-final, work with a visual designer to translate the concept into the look and feel of each individual branded website. Using prototypes, wireframes, and/or design specifications communicate needs to the visual design teams and collaborate with the design teams through delivery of completed designs all the while ensuring integrity of the customer experience.
--Partner with the development team to bring these concepts to realization using the Agile development process. Have the ability to make adjustments to the original designs in response to technical requirements or limitations.


--Become recognized as an expert in user experience within THE COMPANY
--Together with the other UX Designer on the team:
--Develop and maintain site usability guidelines for permanent features, site navigation, and temporary creative content for the company sites.
--Communicate site usability guidelines to partner groups such as Creative and Marketing teams so that they can use them when concepting and creating site content.
--Periodically review site content and site navigation and suggest improvements vis a vis usability.


--5 years of interface design experience developing web or client applications.
--Knowledge of user-centered interface design processes and methodology and UI best practices.
--Ability to design interaction concepts across a range of devices (desktop computer, mobile phone, tablet).
--Knowledge of the software development process and ability to communicate well with software development teams.
--Strong project management skills and ability to function as project leader influencing others as well as individual contributor. Able to work in cross-functional teams.
--Extremely detail-oriented, flexible and able to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment with aggressive development schedules.
--Strong communication skills. Able to present concepts in a clear and convincing manner to a broad range of audiences - from executives to software developers.
--Strong business judgment.

Desired skills

--Experience in visual/information design and ability to either art direct visual designers or personally undertake visual design.
-- Experience with many of the following tools:
--Flow charting and specification tools: Visio, OmniGraffle, etc.
--Design tools: Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc.
-- Implementation tools and techniques: HTML coding, basic JavaScript coding, CSS, DHTML, HTML editors, etc.
--Ecommerce and/or retail experience preferred.
