Graphic Designer / Data Visualization

Vitamin T client is an award-winning web application development company specializing in the needs of Federal Agencies and Associations and is looking for a web / graphic Designer to help with the Data Visualization Team. This rock star designer should not only have a strong skill for infographics, but should be able to showcase multiple portfolio examples.

This is an on-site position, full time located in Potomac Yards in Crystal City, VA.


Primary goal: To effectively communicate charting / graphing / mapping concepts through visual design (primarily for the web)
Create Infographics, designs, concepts, and sample layouts based on knowledge of layout principles and aesthetic design concepts
Work directly with government stakeholders to develop requirements, information architecture, and design documents (mockups, prototypes, specifications) that effectively communicate the visual indicator or data visualization.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Manager and in collaboration with other related teams and Agency Project Managers, as assigned, the successful candidate will, at a minimum:

Portray and analyze available data graphically. More specifically:

The designer will apply analytical skills to envision graphs and technical skills to produce the graphs. The incumbent will be able to identify key trends that emerge from the data that can be visualized graphically, facilitating better understanding to a broad and largely non-technical audience.
The designer will design and build info graphic products for customers; to include, gathering requirements, producing designs, developing the info graphics, and distributing accordingly. Additionally, s/he may leverage COTS data visualization tools and train others on these tools (e.g. Tableau).
The designer will conduct outreach and make presentations on data visualization graphics produced, as well as the usefulness of appropriate data visualization techniques. Strong skills in standard design tools - Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
The designer will have strong Communications skills

Level of complexity of work assignments and work environment

Applying data visualization skills to available datasets will entail complex assignments. The quality and quantity of the data are continuously evolving and require good judgment and analysis as to their applicability. Moreover, a key part of the job will be to help simplify complex trends so that a nontechnical audience can understand them and translate the trends into programmatic decisions. Strong graphic design skills is necessary.

Knowledge level required

The designer must have extensive and demonstrable knowledge and experience in developing useful and informative data visualization graphics requiring high analytic reasoning;
Fluent in the field of Information Technology, with a willingness to learn new tools;
Strong background in Excel, with an ability to move and manipulate data, work with raw data, and present data in a variety of visualization formats;
Team player with excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills;

Desirable Skills:

Knowledge of information security a plus;
Knowledge of Business Intelligence (BI) reports and queries a plus.
Willingness / ability to learn data vis tools (tableau) and gis tools, ArcGIS, etc.
