Email Designer / Front-End Web Developer

Position Summary

Responsible for the design and production of HTML deliverables which will be used for email marketing campaigns and internal email communications. This is a production-heavy, deadline-driven role involving the development (coding) and testing of custom email templates, as well as updates to existing templates. Efficiency and attention to detail are critical. The ideal candidate would have web design and email marketing experience, and possess a varied portfolio including HTML email designs which demonstrate both visual design and coding abilities. (Please have examples of code available for review.)

Primary Duties

− Designing email newsletter layouts in Photoshop, slicing them and coding pixel perfect HTML
− Coding table-heavy (nested table, multi-column) HTML email designs
− Coding with the capabilities and limitations of email clients in mind to ensure that HTML email designs will render accurately and consistently on all platforms, including mobile devices
− Creating HTML email templates which are optimized for use in Microsoft Outlook 2010
− Creating HTML email templates which are optimized for use in various email marketing services’ WYSIWYG editors (e.g. MailChimp, Marketo, Emarsys, etc.)
− Delivering both HTML and plain text versions of emails
− Testing email designs in all major email clients, desktop and mobile operating systems, and troubleshooting any issues that arise
− Uploading files to an FTP server, naming and organizing files properly, and maintaining a clean directory structure
− Writing clean code that validates and is easy to visually parse

Secondary Duties

− Providing additional support to the Creative Services team as needed, including but not limited to graphic design, production and front-end web development assignments (some examples may include: web banner graphics, printed collateral and signage, and microsites)
− Creating functional HTML prototypes sliced from PSD in a relatively short amount of time, either by writing code or using a WYSIWYG code generator like Adobe Muse
− Performing stock photography searches based on specific criteria
− Developing and maintaining design within an established visual identity system
− Taking and applying art direction effectively, and collaborating closely with all members of the Creative Services team as well as cross-functional teams
− Demonstrating strong visual style and thorough understanding of how typography, layout, color, usability, and information architecture impact design
− Delivering all projects on time and in alignment with clients’ communication objectives
− Working within a corporate environment, attending meetings, responding to emails and phone calls, while always being professional

Required Qualifications

− Strong working knowledge of HTML and CSS, with a focus on email design
− Solid portfolio with a range of creative samples that demonstrate relevant work or projects
− Demonstrated success with the generation of original designs and final execution of designs with high visual impact
− Proficient user of Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Photoshop
− Proficient user of Microsoft Office, especially Outlook
− Knowledge of design principles and understanding of brand identity systems and guidelines
− In-depth knowledge of typography, page/screen layout, composition and color theory
− Must be a team player who thrives in a collaborative setting, has strong communication skills and a positive attitude
− Must have a good work ethic, be self-disciplined and able to manage your workload without constant supervision
− Must take pride in your work, be conscientious and attentive to detail
− Must be punctual, reliable, organized, able to multitask and able to meet tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

− Some experience with HTML5 and CSS3 (e.g. parallax scrolling, canvas)
− Some experience with responsive design and mobile development
− Some familiarity with web fonts and their usage
− Some familiarity with email campaign metrics, reporting and A/B testing

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and 5+ years of relevant work experience with an in-house creative team or advertising agency/design studio environment

− Adobe Photoshop
− Adobe Dreamweaver (or similar HTML editor)
− TextPad (or similar plain text editor)
− Microsoft Outlook 2010
− MailChimp (or similar email marketing service)
− Return Path (or similar email rendering and deliverability tester)
− Firebug (or similar in-browser editor)
− Web Developer Toolbar (or similar in-browser debugger)
− Cyberduck (or similar FTP client)

Preferred Software Proficiency

− Adobe Muse
− Adobe Illustrator
− Adobe InDesign
− JavaScript (jQuery)
