Demographics Writer/Journalist

Come and work for a well respected, non profit charitable organization providing grants to improve public policy, inform the public, and support community service. This position will sit in their Washington, DC office and has potential to convert to a permanent position within the company.

You will be a part of a team of experienced writers and editors who cover trends and key developments in state policy and politics. The demographics writer will focus on demographic, social and economic trends that are reshaping cities and states. This content will help state leaders put some of their most pressing policy questions into context and alert them to emerging challenges and opportunities – in short, an understanding of how and why it matters where you live. The writer is responsible for conceiving, researching, analyzing data, and writing content that is compelling, thorough and analytical. The staff writer also will adapt to the use of digital reporting tools to create content for the website.

This position reports to the Executive Editor, who is based in Washington, DC.

Job Responsibilities:
• Conceive and write big-picture articles and series on state policy developments relating to demographic developments and trends in the states.
• Identify data or content for multimedia and data-driven stories.
• Collaborate with client's researchers and policy analysts to surface emerging issues in this subject area and write stories that reach, engage, inform and influence state policy.

Job Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• At least five years’ practical experience in news or feature writing and demonstrated expertise of demographic issues required.
• Capacity to develop digital outreach and content dissemination strategies.
• Track record of producing accurate daily news, news features and analytical articles on tight deadlines.
• Excellent interviewing skills, grammar and command of AP style required
• Understanding of state and national government as they relate to fiscal and budget policy preferred.
• Computer-assisted reporting skills and experience with databases or spreadsheets a plus.
