Creative Lead

A client in the retail industry is currently looking for a Creative Lead! In this role you will be responsible for managing the creative team and driving creative strategy. You will also provide innovation and direction to support merchandising, marketing and branding goals. The right individual for this role will have a passion for what they do and will bring that passion to work every day!

Duties and Responsibilities

A. Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manages and oversees all areas of the Creative Team.
  • Establishes and maintains effective verbal and written communication systems.
  • Partners with the Staffing Manager to interview and hire qualified candidates.
  • Assesses, prioritizes and delegates tasks and project work. Provides support as needed.
  • Ensures that scheduling and labor allocation to meet business needs and labor budget.
  • Ensures adequate staffing conditions and that staff take breaks within legal guidelines.
  • Completes time clock edits for staff on a weekly basis.
  • Holds staff members accountable for following policies and procedures.
  • Creates a warm, welcoming and supportive work environment with friendliness, understanding, consistency, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership. Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and work ethic.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic Human Resources concepts; works with resources at store level to increase knowledge.

  • B. Marketing Department Responsibilities
  • Drives creative strategy to support merchandising, marketing and branding goals.
  • Delivers creative solutions that communicate clearly and stand out in the online arena.
  • Stays current with competitive landscape, emerging trends and site metrics to inform work.
  • Drives innovation in all aspects of job: creative execution, user experience, marketing tactics, workflows and organizational structure.
  • Oversees creative for online and offline advertising, photography and ownership of lifestyle and product images.
  • Manages the Marketing Seasonal Roadmap.
  • Collaborates with marketing on digital strategy.
  • Defines direction for marketing projects including: branded promotions, charitable initiatives, direct mail, retail and product packaging & labeling, new market local print and mall advertising, PR and events, new store marketing collateral and signage, store set window graphics, store set sign packages and in-store graphics.
  • Conceptualizes and supervises all creative for .com, which include home pages, emails, banners, etc along with any digital campaigns.
  • Ensures that the integrity of the brand is present in all facets of the digital experience while supporting business goals.
  • Provides forward-thinking creative leadership.
  • Inspires creative collaboration across the organization.
  • Translates brand vision online. Sets styles guides and templates.
  • Engages in hands-on design for complex projects.
  • Fosters a culture of excellence, creativity and results.
  • Pushes creativity and explore new ways to craft unique solutions that reflect and evolve the brand.
  • Ensures that projects are delivered on time, on budget and brand appropriate; constantly evaluates resources and accountabilities within dynamic retail environment.
  • Oversees budget responsibilities for creative services expenses such as freelance employee costs, training, travel and other team expenses.
  • Promotes effective communication in the Marketing Department, including changes, expectations, and needs.

  • C. Staff Development
  • Ensures growth and learning of the individuals on the creative team; providing real time feedback and coaching.
  • Supervises and coaches department staff. Communicates expectations, holds accountable for meeting standards and provides ongoing feedback, training and coaching. Demonstrates ability to adapt approach to different learning styles among staff.
  • Responsible for overall training and knowledge of staff. Seeks opportunities to train and develop staff members to take on increased responsibilities. Teaches department management skills to Meat Assistant Manager and Seafood Manager to prepare for promotion.
  • Promotes a collaborative team environment through recognition, leading by example and working alongside staff. Demonstrates approachability and fosters open communication. Creates an environment where staff are invested and encouraged to contribute ideas.
  • Demonstrates a pro-active approach in resolving staff issues and conflicts. Works with Store Management Team as needed.
  • Prepares and delivers corrective actions in a timely manner. Follows documentation guidelines. Consults with Store Management as needed.
  • Prepares and delivers timely performance reviews. Adheres to wage increase guidelines.
  • Conducts quarterly department meetings.

  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel to multiple locations.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or equivalent work experience.
  • 10 years design experience preferred; minimum 8 years management experience
  • Strong creative instincts balanced with very solid strategic and analytical capabilities.
  • Experience in vertical specialty retailing with a strong brand image as well as a proven track record in brand repositioning/re-positioning.
  • Proven people management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, solve complex problems while maintaining flexibility in fast-paced environment.
  • A team player that possesses strong leadership and communication skills, inspiration and vision.
  • Experienced in various forms of media and have displayed financial creativity in leveraging marketing dollars.
  • Superior graphic design and typography skills and photoshoot experience.
  • Excellent time & project management, communications, decision making, presentation, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Proficient Mac and/or PC skills, with exceptional knowledge/experience in Microsoft Office.
  • Advanced Adobe Creative Suite skills - Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop (Flash and/or HTML5 experience a plus).
  • Knowledge of offset and digital print techniques.
  • Collaborative, highly motivated self-starter.
  • Ability to work independently, effectively manage own time and problem solve in a busy work environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality around sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, vendors and customers.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow through on verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule in order to meet needs of the department.
  • Ability to reliably meet required work schedule and adhere to company attendance policy.

  • Permits and Licenses: Driver’s license required.

    Work Environment
  • Includes working in an office environment.
  • May include working in a variety of off-site environments including indoor and outdoor locations.
  • Typically, maintains a moderate noise level.
  • Working with exposure to dust, mold, gluten, fragrances and other fumes and airborne particles, fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants, and flowers.
  • Working and using common commercial cleaning agents.
