Top Portland brand-design agency looking for a Creative Director. This is a contract to hire position, located in beautiful Portland, OR (open to relo for amazing candidate). Must have agency management experience, along with a killer portfolio, and sense of humor is an absolute must.

The Creative Director cultivates and leads the creative team with a strong understanding of brand strategy and conceptual ideation to shape ideas in marketing, design, retail, event, social and digital realms. This role requires exceptional communication skills with the ability to educate, inspire and guide creative efforts; to deliver innovative ideas and cultivate those of others on the team. Ours is a high energy, low ego environment. The right candidate is confident without pretense and is a motivated self-starter and great collaborator.

  • Clear communication is imperative ? both written and verbal ? with ability to offer constructive criticism, positive reinforcement and inspiration. Must be comfortable running a room/presenting ideas both internally and to clients.
  • Forms positive working relationships with clients and team members as well as outside consultants/vendors.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented management environment while having an entrepreneurial attitude that assumes ownership for company?s success.


  • Leadership:
  • Promote and foster growth within design division.
  • Provides strategic management and directs ongoing development of creative team.
  • Fosters a team environment, inspires and promotes learning.
  • Key participant in sustaining agency culture.
  • Oversee the coordination of the work schedule for the department, when needed, making sure workflow is properly prioritized and to the client?s expectations.


  • Strategy/Communication:
  • Oversees development of research, brand analysis and marketing strategy for specific accounts and projects.
  • Works in collaboration with marketing, account management and all other internal teams to set benchmarks for internal communication systems.


  • Design/Technical:
  • Broad-based understanding of brand strategy and all design disciplines, including environmental, graphic and multimedia design, as well as strong knowledge of advertising.
  • Knowledgeable in hardware/software platforms utilized by design team.
  • Conversant with all relevant execution disciplines, including estimating processes, fabrication, graphic and digital media.
  • Excellent presentation skills?set the standard in this area.
  • Seek out and stay current in new advances in digital and other design tools.
  • Consistently produce outstanding conceptual work.


  • Business:
  • Responsible for overall financial management of creative team, including development and implementation of internal budget, management of estimating and billing structure for design, and fiscal planning for department growth.
  • Encompassing grasp of all aspects of business ? able to provide vision for departmental long range objectives.
  • Able to design to targeted execution budgets, as well as track project hours/costs and work within design budget parameters.
  • Understands impact of design budgets on overall department and company financial picture.
  • Develops design budgets, and preliminary execution budgets as required.
  • Working collaboratively to help affect the success of projects and to do everything possible to maintain long term client relationships and to promote referral business.
  • Working to continually define agency's external marketing strategies and objectives.
  • Participate in quarterly/bi-annual sales meetings.
  • Lead revenue development strategies. Utilize and leverage existing client relationships as well as identifying new ones.
  • Drive strategy and tracking measures for agency's initiatives for new and existing clients.
  • Participating with key team members to create and participate in delivery of pitch presentations.
  • Developing a global understanding of agency?s existing clients? business and partnership levels.
  • Travel estimated up to 25% - as needed to support new and on-going client business.
