Content Editor (News) - 12 month contract

We are urgently looking for a Content Editor to work within an App Team at the world’s largest software provider.

The role will be involving the curation, rather than creation, of news content from selected new providers such as Sky News, BBC, the Telegraph, Reuters etc.

You will come from a journalistic news background and have a good grasp of online media. You will have experience of dealing with breaking news and working within a live news environment. Experience of using a CMS is a requirement. You will also have some experience of editing photos in Photoshop to intermediate level.

You will be joining a team of 6 editors of varying experience and personality types who work well together to cover off the numerous aspects of news. It is important to note that the team cover 18 hour days, 7 days a week.

There is a good rotation system in place so the candidate will be expected to work roughly 1 weekend in 3 as well as work to a combination of start times which could include either 6am or 12am whenever necessary.

The initial contract will be running until the end of June 2014 and is offered on a salary of £25,000 - £30,000 + 25 days holiday, benefits and a discretionary bonus scheme of up to 15%. Start date is ASAP.

Programming an exciting and compelling set of apps that reflect and evolve major UK and global stories

Testing and rolling out new functionality and services including realtime coverage

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Proven experience of executing stories in News and Sport

Proven experience of live and breaking news coverage as a journalist. You will have your finger on the pulse of current trends and know what will be popular with users

You understand what makes a topical, news-worthy feature and what inspires the audience

Must be a lover of all things social media, and be ready to respond quickly and efficiently to news that breaks through this medium

Must have a close eye on competitor apps and understand strengths and weaknesses of other competitors

Must have a proven track record in spotting great pictures and know how to sell them with an original angle

Must write stop-you-in-your-tracks headlines and copy and be able to crop and manipulate images to a high standard

Be able to demonstrate an ability to operate under pressure and change priorities through the day as stories move on

Technical / Functional Skills

- Adobe Photoshop – intermediate to expert level
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience of using CMS

Personal Attributes / Interpersonal Skills

- Very strong team player but with ability to work on own initiative
- Should be able to deal with high-pressure, realtime environments
- Be willing to respond to any content requests at the last minute
- Should be creative and demonstrate an ability to take an ordinary story and make it stand out from the crowd
- Should be motivated to make every word count and beat the competition
