The specialized communication consultant develops and manages communication programs, initiatives, campaigns and media channels that support Northwestern Mutual’s Client Experience strategy. These activities inform, educate, and influence a range of target audiences including the company’s clients, prospects, key influencers, the field, employees and other stakeholders. Works under the guidance of and in collaboration with the assistant director.

- Conceptualize, design, manage, and assess communication programs, initiatives, campaigns and media channels that align with and support corporate and/or function communication priorities to drive business outcomes by producing desired outcomes among target audiences.
- Consult with business partners in need of specialized communication guidance or support. Based on these consultations, develop communication plan and/or write communication strategies that support or drive desired business outcomes.
- Align messaging within programs, initiatives, campaigns and media channels with overall strategic corporate and/or function message platform.
- Execute key aspects of communication programs with particular emphasis on writing key messages, supporting documents (news releases, FAQs, copy concepts, etc.), news articles, collateral, etc.
- Ensure planning and delivery of effective integrated communication solutions through collaborative working relationships with each functional area of communications department and company-wide partners, as appropriate.
- Engage with and guide communication teams (may include other communication consultants or specialists, creative resources, freelancer or external consultants, etc.) to plan, conceive, develop and implement communication solutions including range of traditional and non-traditional venues, media, channels and tactics.
- Collaborate with the communication department client relationship manager who is responsible for the overall health and growth of relationships with internal business partners.
- Collaborate with communication consultants to assure understanding of business partner priorities and tight alignment and coordination of communication department support to business partners.
- Identify, establish and manage working relationships with outside vendors, contractors, freelancers, etc., as appropriate, to ensure adequate support and expertise is available to execute programs, initiatives, etc.
- Plan and/or manage the measurement of the effectiveness of communication support and/or return on communication investment.
- Identify and connect collaborations across teams and clients, as appropriate.
- Works more frequently in tandem with relationship manager, senior consultants and/or functional leader on designated programs and initiatives. Counsels with manager in communication planning process.

Required Experience:

- Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public relations, marketing or social sciences.
- At least six years of progressive experience in professional communication, public relations, organizational communication, marketing, training or related communication field.
- Emphasis on specialized knowledge of public relations, media relations, organizational communication, investor relations or issues management.
- Strong professional communication skills including business and communication writing; public speaking in small- and large-group settings; and one-to-one interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to listen to, engage, and influence clients; synthesize and relate complex information; analyze communication problems and opportunities; and develop and implement specialized communication strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and counsel senior business managers in the appropriate use of communication strategies and tactics to inform and influence target audiences.
- Experience and proficiency with a range of external and internal communication solutions: face-to-face; print and electronic channels; media relations; creative media solutions. Prefer knowledge of social media applications.
- Polished organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Desired:
- Experience with social media strategy development and execution is desired (yammer, online communities, etc.).
- Knowledge and experience in use of PowerPoint and SharePoint is desired.
