A non-profit organization based in Boston, MA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, we work globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. Programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and Boston.

Overview
Seeking a detail-oriented book designer to create training materials for Community Health Workers. The designer will create, edit and iterate books and other curriculum materials from existing InDesign templates, as well as create new templates as needed. The training curriculum materials are visually rich and require a solid understanding of stylesheets (paragraph, character, table, cell, object, etc.) and master pages in InDesign, and of using images, icons, tables and other objects in the text flow. Knowledge of various printing processes and working with printers/vendors is important. While many materials are produced in languages other than English, knowledge of these languages is not required, but the designer will need to have a willingness to carefully follow editors' notes when typesetting them. The ideal candidate is self-directed, extremely organized, flexible and deadline driven, with a passion for finding innovative solutions to unique design challenges.

Specific Responsibilities
• Take a lead role in managing all design aspects of the training curriculum materials.
• Pour and format text, insert graphics and tables, style, typeset, and otherwise complete production for a variety of publications with existing templates.
• Create new InDesign templates based on existing brand/style with high readability, pedagogical effectiveness and appeal.
• Use existing and/or design new book cover templates with visual appeal, strong typography and imagery from PIH's extensive photo collection.
• Iterate book content as simple PowerPoint presentations.
• Modify, retouch, scan and otherwise prepare illustrations, photos and other art for placement in books.
• Make changes and edits to books based on Training Department and editors' comments with an extremely high degree of accuracy.
• Take full responsibility for ensuring final products are fully proofed, corrected and prepared for printing or electronic dissemination.
• Participate in planning, budgeting and scheduling Training Department design projects and deliverables.
• Assure that projects meet their quality, cost and delivery requirements.
• Identify opportunities to re-use or repurpose existing templates or resources for cost savings, efficacy and consistency.
• Communicate clearly and proactively with team to alert them of design-related content problems or any other issues that impact design and production. Keep team members up-to-date on schedules, design and production decisions and other relevant information.
• Attend department and team meetings and communicate project status and solutions to supervisor.
• Collaborate with other departments on design projects as needed.
Qualifications
• 4+ years experience in print production and design, preferably in publishing or publication design. We'll also consider candidates with fewer years experience but with a design degree and/or demonstrated ability to meet qualifications.
• Excellent sense of design and typography. Passion for typographic detail.
• Extremely strong Adobe InDesign skills and avid interest in continuously learning more.
• Knowledge of print-production-relevant aspects of Adobe Photoshop (color models, light retouching, etc.)
• Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator (tracing features, drawing or editing simple icons, cleaning up scans, etc.)
• Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat for creating PDFs.
• Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint for making simple presentations using Slide Masters.
• Strong understanding of production, typesetting and printing.
• Strong communication, proofreading/proofing and editing skills.
• Strong organizational skills. Extreme attention to detail. Commitment to excellence — takes pride in the work.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines in a time-pressured environment.
• Flexibility, sense of humor.
• Knowledge of languages (French, Spanish, Kreyol, African languages, et al.) a plus.
• Interest in issues of global health and social justice.
