Associate Art Director

We are seeking art directors, with a strong mastery of communication design, who thrive in a collaborative, fully integrated marketing environment. This candidate must be experienced in closely partnering with writers to concept, execute, and fine tune marketing concepts. Additionally, they must be able to fluidly work with other disciplines, working in conjunction with brand strategists, including social media and online developers on projects that define and express our brand. They will have a demonstrated knowledge of creating brand-building work across multiple touch points. They will be up to the challenge of meeting the design standards of one of the greatest design schools in the world.
Primary Responsibilities
-Guided by the Art Director, must develop holistic concepts, in collaboration with writers and brand messaging staff, that help university partners define and meet their communications objectives for hundreds of projects annually, including view books, catalogs, search pieces and brochures, signage, merchandise, advertising, and invitations, as well as websites and other digital marketing initiatives.
-Advises on typography, layout, information architecture, palette, use of photography or illustration, and other graphic elements and techniques. Must ensure that the design fulfills strategic objectives and reinforces the brand mission and vision.
-Oversees process, schedules, assignments, and the productivity and quality of work of each member of the graphic design team. Ensures that designers remain motivated, focused and integrated into the department as a whole.
-Along with or in place of the Art Director, represents the graphic design department at partner meetings with New School colleagues and is able to interpret the desired goals, message, and target audience. Advises on appropriate design action to fulfill those needs. Has the creative independence to represent his/her vision and point of view in these collaborations.
-Assumes the managerial and leadership duties of the Art Director in his/her absence. Shares the daily managerial and creative responsibilities of the Art Director as required.
-Creates Web and print-worthy files that reflect effective and efficient production within budgets. Maintains awareness of sustainability and makes appropriate choices throughout the process on all projects.
-Works with photo editor to select and manage digital assets. Makes recommendations for new photography based on anticipated needs for upcoming projects.
-Stays abreast of changes in the graphic design and online media industries and of new techniques and programs that will improve the efficiency and creativity of the office.
-Mentors and provides creative guidance to design staff, staying attentive to individual strengths and challenges in the design team. Finds ways to reinforce and develop individual skills.
-Must be skilled at interpreting strategic briefs in order to develop conceptual work that solves for marketing and communication goals.
-Will report to the Art Director and Creative Director.

Requirements
-6+ years of professional experience as a Senior Designer and/or Art Director, supervising other designers and related art professionals. Print and Web experience essential.
-Knowledge of XHTML, CSS, digital imaging, video software, and designing for online entities a plus. -Advanced interactive skills and pre-press and print production experience.
-Excellent interpersonal, managerial, and organizational skills.
-Additional ability in illustration, photography, editing, and proofreading a plus.
-Bachelor’s degree in the humanities or in the fine or graphic arts with significant related design coursework; master’s degree in design preferred.
-Strong collaborative spirit required.
