Associate Art Director

The Associate Art Director contributes to the design of a leading sports web site.
Working under the supervision of Art Directors and the Design Director, Associate Art Directors are responsible for the look and feel exploration, conceptual and visual development as well as the final execution of design directions.

This important role requires broad knowledge and advanced skills in visual design, information architecture, user interface, web standards, and a solid understanding of available client-side technologies. Qualified candidates will share our belief that design is as much about behavior and emotion as it is about utility and ease of use.
AAD’s provide leadership in concept development, creation of original art and wire-frames, project design/development, and QA. They are responsible for the development of innovative navigation systems, interface designs, typography, and page layouts for web packages and other interactive media.

Other key aspects of the job:
• Participates in developing the look and feel of main site‘s brand, marketing, positioning and competitive strategies for assigned properties; typically is assigned to event-driven design packages
• Participates in hiring or recommending freelance artists and designers for assigned site pages / sections of the sites
• Applies some ingenuity, creativity and analytical and organizational skills to identify and evaluate alternatives and to develop or participate in developing aspects of brand strategy and of marketing initiatives for assigned site pages / sections of the sites
• Train and manage direct reports

Job Requirements and Skills:
Qualified candidates must have at least 5+ years’ experience working within the field of interactive media design, and possess the following characteristics:
- Demonstrated record of creating cutting-edge and original design solutions on tight deadlines
- Sensitive to user behavior as it relates to design – must have a deep appreciation of how news and sports information are best presented online
- Self-motivated, a natural problem-solver, and a good communicator with a demonstrated ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously, both independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Expert facility with design software, e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash, Actionscript 2.0, css based page construction. Some After Effects knowledge desired. Must be MAC and PC literate.
- Solid understanding of practical benefits and limitations of Internet technologies (Flash, javascript, css, video.)
- Intimate knowledge of HTML and CSS, understanding how comps translate to code.
- Effective team leader and player
- Leadership and management skills, manages multiple projects, produces design while aiding in the management of other designers, may have direct reports
- Demonstrated track record as designer on high traffic Web sites
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fine Arts or Graphic Design or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated understanding of the mechanics, contents and operating philosophy of the web site, including an understanding of the optimal experience for a sports fan.
