Our client is looking for an Art Director for a temp to perm role in Boston, MA. This is a HIGHLY confidential search, so the name of the client can only be revealed once the talent expresses interest. This position would start at the end of March.

Brief Description:

Their ideal person needs to be hands-on, doing design him/herself, but also the arbiter of quality and style. They're also thinking of outsourcing their current print design team and ramping up on digital design (and will be building their internal UX/UI team in-house), so the person would need to lead them through that process as well. Lastly, this person should be comfortable negotiating contracts with their vendors as they outsource other work. Project management is key for this role.

The role is approximately 60% print/40% digital. They are a PC based environment.

This person would oversee two senior designers, as well as 1-2 mid-level digital designers.


FULL DESCRIPTION:


Our client is searching for someone with a creative background, a passion for growing and fostering a collaborative work environment, and comfortable with the culture of constant change. As Art Director, your role will be to articulate and develop innovative design approaches and solutions for print and digital to reflect our editorial strategy and meet our market needs. This position works closely with internal functional areas, including editorial/tech editorial, digital product management, marketing, print production/tech production, manufacturing, as well as outside design studios. To realize our product vision, this role will implement top-quality, sophisticated and practical design across all product lines.

Responsibilities:
PRINT
• Manage and execute print strategy of outsourcing creative design for book covers and interiors, providing artistic and conceptual guidance, as appropriate.
• Source projects to appropriate creative resources based on strength of portfolio, skills, and specialization. Maintain relationships with and keep a creative database of designers, studios, illustrators.
• Identify design requirements thru creation of design briefs to ensure understanding and appropriate creative response within time and budget constraints.
• Oversee the transformation of outsourced designs into high-quality, print-ready deliverables to make sure that prototypes and templates are created with correct specifications.
• Work closely with Editorial Project Managers and Print Production Director to oversee design projects, create schedules, set priorities to meet deadlines, create and track budgets, and assign resources accordingly.
• Work closely with Marketing Managers to fully understand design requirements for marketing materials. Ensure brand guidelines are applied to all forms of communication (print and digital).
• Enforce visual branding, identity style, quality control for publishing programs.
• Able to get your hands dirty; create clean, elegant, and compelling design, layout for book covers and interior pages, as needed.



DIGITAL
• Manage a (small) onsite UI team, providing artistic and conceptual guidance, as needed.
• Work closely and collaboratively with digital team: Product Management, UX, Tech Production, Tech Engineers to figure out the best way to communicate the product’s goals in an online environment.
• Conceptualize and create intuitive, engaging, and brand-consistent user interfaces that bring simplicity and ease of use to complex design issues for use in websites, mobile applications, and other digital applications.
• Oversee UI designer execution of all visual design stages through the full design and development cycle (including idea creation, visual design and interaction design).
• Oversee cross-functional design reviews by UI designers for design concepts, from initial wireframes and design comps through functional prototypes and implementation.
• Oversee visual design guidance for cross browser and mobile device support.
• Ensure UI designer interaction with developers through implementation phase to realize design vision.
• Oversee day-to-day operational activities, oversee design projects, create schedules, set priorities to meet deadlines, create and track budgets, and assign resources accordingly.


Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
• Design degree required
• At least 5 years’ experience in art direction for print and digital
• At least 3 years’ experience in managing a creative team, including performance assessment and coaching
• Robust design portfolio with a combination of print and web
• Solid skills in visual design, with an eye for typography, composition, layout, color, and compelling imagery
• Expert-level experience in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
• Must have working knowledge of technical aspects of web design so that what you design can be built
• Solid understanding of production requirements for print and digital outputs
• Experience with strategic brainstorming, creative brief development, and creative execution
• An innate ability to simultaneously support creative goals and business objectives
• Amazing listener, flexible, and able to adapt to constant change
• Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills.
• Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills across all levels of the organization, especially when balancing project success with stakeholder requirements and goals.
• Good judgment with the ability to make difficult decisions.
• Relationship builder, can forge strong working relationships with creative team members, freelancers, and studios
• Advanced knowledge of marketing/branding/communications concepts, a plus.
