Job Description:

We are looking for a Communication Designer for our automotive client's innovative mobility program. The Communication Designer will manage and support the team’s communication and branding initiatives with city departments, local communities, industry and internal partners through compelling visual storytelling. You will be asked to visually communicate the mobility stories of city residents gathered through ethnographic research, in addition to creating frameworks and presentations for internal strategy. 

Skills Required:

  • Communicate program insights, values and outcomes, and why it’s critical to put people at the center of mobility innovation and design.
  • Tell the unique and personal stories of local community members in a way that deeply resonates with public and private sector leaders.
  • Make complex, social and business challenges feel simple and tangible through intuitive, authentic and realistic storytelling and design.
  • Use graphics, information hierarchy and photography to tell complex stories and/or theories in concise and simple ways.
  • Revel in the art of detail, with a desire to shape the bigger picture so people can make the connection between communities, mobility innovation and urban policy.
  • Support the design and development of immersive workshop experiences that integrates the needs and imagination of local communities.
  • Stay up to speed on communication trends to bring real-world inspiration to our work, so we are always pushing the edge of what is possible.
  • Produce, coordinate and edit City:One digital and print visual communications, ensuring that they are consistent, effective, accessible, and engaging for all audiences.
  • Strike a balance between visual and verbal tone, integrating points of view from research, urban design and innovation teams to translate program takeaways into workable, engaging documents.
  • Act as primary point of contact and coordinator for the websites, including content management and website design (within an existing web platform – e.g., IdeaScale).
  • Work closely with social media manager to ensure that social content is consistent with other City Innovations communications.
  • Create prototypes that help tell a project’s story, enabling co-creation and collaboration among teams and/or members of the public.
  • Act as copy editor for all major City Innovations communications (e.g., website content, program reports, executive briefings).
  • Collaborate and liaise with other Ford partners and creative agencies on content production and execution.
  • Develop infographics, graphic-rich final reports, illustrations, photo collages and custom branding for program clientele.
  • Manage image libraries and other social, marketing, and research assets.

Experience Required:

  • 3+ years of professional communication design experience
  • 1+ years’ experience using human centered design, design thinking principles or methods in a formal, in-person setting.
  • Appreciation and curiosity for communities and people from a diverse set of backgrounds
  • Ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities and people with disabilities.
  • A passion for improving equity, safety and sustainability in the communities we serve
  • Expertise in Microsoft PowerPoint


Experience Preferred:

  • Background in communication theory and/or sophisticated strategic frameworks 3
  • Extensive experience across a variety of media (print, motion, web) including fluency in the following software: Adobe Creative Suite. InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Sketch, Keynote, Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with typography, publication design, cartography, branding and web design.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Communication Design or New Media OR High School Diploma or GED and 2+ years’ experience in Graphic Design, Communication Design or New Media.
