**Seeking a talented Technical Designer for Fortune 500 Apparel brand**
General Position Summary:
Responsible for creating the development process and technical aspects of assigned apparel and accessory products by collaborating closely with cross functional partners in design and product development to ensure design integrity, quality, color, and target price are met/maintained and that products are developed within established timelines.
-MUST BE an material experts: This candidate must have experience in product development, not in sourcing (costing/allocations).
-Designers are not a good match for this position, this is more of an “accountant job”
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
-Collaborate with Apparel Design to procure critical design information related to the technical development requirements of a style or product including; material, trim, color direction and style intent.
-Provide accurate apparel and accessory technical illustrations and construction details.
Ensure critical computer data for seasonal styles and the PDM (product data management) process.
-Apply color to technical sketches as directed for seasonal cad books and sales tools. Communicate category related product information to internal departments.
-Participate as a team member in creating, tracking, organizing, and proofing product related information. Keep computer files organized and updated for access by team members.
-Ensure bill of materials, specification, measurements and construction comments are maintained, accurate and communicated to appropriate downstream partners.
-Ensure color details are entered and accurate in PDM system.
-Shepherd prototype creation from initial specification creation through first and second prototype to fit approval.
-Attend fit sessions for assigned category to make necessary notations for sketch updates as a result of fit sessions.
-Review factory prototypes for accuracy, quality and function. This includes updating tech sketches or detail sketches as needed. Communicate findings to the appropriate persons including, Design/Merchandising, Sourcing and the LO Merchandising team and make necessary notations for sketch updates.
-Partner with cross-functional team on sales sample evaluation.
-Assist in proofing seasonal catalogs for sketch and color accuracy.
-Work with manager and team members to ensure that calendar deadlines are met to reach company goals.
-Participate in team meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as needed to assure strong communication on all process and product related issues.
-Maintain positive open lines of communication with all management, staff and other departments in order to contribute to the smooth flow of information and efficient operation of the organization.
-Maintain reports, records, files, and samples pertaining to the process or styles.
-Read related research and understand the market and how it pertains to company brand; keep abreast of product sales information.
-Working knowledge of fabrics and trims associated with the development process.
-Ensure quality is maintained to established company standards. Perform other related duties as assigned
-Provide CAD art to graphics for Catalog purposes
-Support various inline production responsibilities, which may include yarn dye creation, graphic tee comps, trim schematics, and PDM functions.
-Participate in design related activities, which may include local market shopping and seasonal design presentations.
Job generally involves a degree of complexity in performing recurring and non-recurring work situations. Will work from established processes and may be asked to contribute to the development of new ones. Receives supervision and guidance from Design
Manager and/or Sr. Design Lead. Work is reviewed at varying Waypoints during the season to ensure quality and timeliness.
Demonstrates the ability to carry substantial workloads during peak periods.
Demonstrates initiative and thorough knowledge of the product development process and job requirements. Job tasks are performed under a moderate level of supervision.
Work is proofed against a standard or original and by results. Errors in judgment can cause delays in the production process.
This job is not supervisory in nature.
Contacts are normally made with others inside and outside the organization. Internal
contacts may include all members of the Product Creation Process and other personnel
involved in the production process. Interactions focus on information exchange and
problem solving. Initiates own contact with 30-50% being by phone/email and the
remainder via face to face interaction.
Create strong team interaction with Design, Product Development, Color,
Surface Design, Sourcing, Planning, Materials Research, Quality Assurance, LO
Merchandising and contract manufacturer to ensure a coordinated and efficient
Specific Job Skills:
Requires excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Basic knowledge of
fabrics and trims associated with the development process. Possess knowledge of
general design process from concept to pre-production, garment construction methods
and manufacturing sewing operations, including pattern making, grading and marking
processes. Must have excellent Adobe Illustrator skill set including Adobe Photoshop
and Adobe InDesign. Word, Excel, and good understanding of these types of programs
is also recommended. Ability to work under pressure, to meet strict timelines and
manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Possess good written and verbal
communication skills to deal with various levels of management and employees within
the organization as well as vendors and worldwide personnel. Must have a strong
knowledge of color perception. Must have mental capability to troubleshoot and solve
problems of a moderate complexity. Must be physically able to sit for extended periods
of time, bend, stoop, kneel, operate computer hardware/software including keyboarding.
Must have excellent eyesight free from any color impairment. Physical ability to lift and
carry up to 10 lbs.
Education and/or Experience:
College degree or equivalent with course work in apparel design, textile, manufacturing,
graphics or related experience. And one to three years work experience in apparel
development, or related field OR equivalent work experience in the apparel industry.
Experience with outdoor industry and apparel category preferred.
Job may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week,
especially when working on rush/special projects. Requires extended periods of CRT or
LCD work. Some pressure may exist when facing deadlines
