Job Description:

Our biotechnology client in Pleasanton, CA is looking for a Data Analyst (Associate Portfolio Analyst) to support targeted, effective and efficient business planning processes by sourcing, synthesising, summarising and providing key portfolio analytics that enable informed decisions to support ever-improving business results, including revenue, profitability, market share, optimal use of resources, and ROI.


The Analysts provide objective information and insights using data and analytical techniques that support local cross-functional teams, including Finance and R&D Life Cycle Teams engaged in business planning/management. They act as a competency center developing and driving portfolio analytics competencies across our client's operations and teams.

This role will be primarily responsible (70%) for creating portfolio dashboards and reports and serve as a business partner supporting various other functions such as Finance with portfolio analysis. This role will also curate and administer business database repositories such as GRRP and SPMT (30%).


  • Provides timely, targeted and objective portfolio insights to support achievement of business strategies, goals and targets
    • Supports continuous improvement and best practices for portfolio analytics, insights and reporting
    • Identifies appropriate data sources to support portfolio analytics deliverables, which may include working with external data/research providers
    • Brings disparate quantitative and qualitative data together to form objective insights to support the business in its decision-making and strategic planning
    • Supports in the development and maintenance of Strategic Portfolio Management tools
    • Presents data and insights both verbally and in writing. Where applicable, involves team members and stakeholders in supporting portfolio analytics and insights reporting
    • Works with manager and other internal partners/stakeholders to establish and implement standardised rules, methodologies and processes to manage portfolio analytics from creation through retirement
    • Performance Indicators & Measures:
      • Portfolio analytics and insights are consistently relevant, perceived as valuable, and provided in a timely manner
      • Internal partner/stakeholder requests for routine and ad hoc analysis and reporting are met within agreed objectives, scope, standards and timelines
      • Optimal use of data and analysis. Uses and/or shares data, findings and insights for multiple purposes and maximum leverage
  • Effectively supports creation of project economic valuation and portfolio review
    • Supports in identifying any data gaps and ways to leverage existing data for maximum business use, value and impact
    • Support creation of improved portfolio review processes that include budget, project go/no-go decisions, portfolio balancing, 10Y sales & OP projections, and capacity management
    • Performs project valuation using the established strategic valuation model
    • Works with functions to support on-going capacity management
    • Performance Indicators & Measures:
      • Effective, accurate and timely support to internal business partners/stakeholders, as evident through partner/stakeholder feedback
      • Makes critical contributions to the ongoing development and improvement of Strategic Portfolio analytics processes and tools
  • Provides effective and timely portfolio reporting
    • Solicits internal & external business partner/stakeholder input to ensure reporting will exceed stakeholder needs and objectives
    • Identifies, recommends and uses appropriate data sources for reporting
    • Participates in the implementation of new or otherwise updated reporting,
    • Supports SPMT system administrator and training support for GRRP
    • Ad-hoc projects / initiatives in R&D related to portfolio management  
    • Produce portfolio analysis and R&D progress and performance reports; including tableau reports and business presentations (budget dashboards, capacity analysis, and project and portfolio reports)

  • Undergraduate degree in business/commerce, finance, mathematics, statistics, life sciences or related discipline
  • 2 or more years’ previous portfolio analytics and/or project management related experience in in vitro diagnostics, biotechnology, or related industry
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint & Outlook
  • Proficient with Tableau and data visualization techniques
  • Familiarity with competitive activity in the in vitro diagnostics /biotechnology industry
  • Good knowledge and use of tools such as Excel, Think Cell, PowerPoint, MS Windows, MS Office, MS Visio, MS SharePoint
