Assistant Buyer, Maternity and Body

Start Date:  ASAP

Contract Length:  On-Going

Location:  San Francisco, CA

Pay Rate:  $23/hour

The Assistant Buyer will be part of the Japan online team to drive sales.


  • Partner with Buying Manager to build seasonal strategies for the Maternity and Body division and manage financial success by meeting sales and margin goals
  • Represent divisions/brand and present a point of view in business meetings
  • Recap and analyze actual sales results to plan, and forecast in-season sales on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.  Recap business in relationship with Japan store results
  • Identify risks and opportunities to business and recommend strategies to achieve financial goals
  • Partner with Buying Manager through seasonal photo planning processes.  Align with global online merchandising team on key messages and create market appropriate exclusive messages in partnership with marketing team.  Ensure exclusive messages are driving both channels (online and stores) for Japan.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with members of cross-functional teams and able to influence cross functional teams and able to influence them to achieve results
  • Assist with web management to create a compelling product experience on the site, to include, inspirational merchandise presentation, simple and intuitive category navigation and clear and accurate product details
  • Approve photography and update sorts
  • Strong organizational skill and able to create processes when surrounded by ambiguity
  • Hindsight businesses quarterly and mid-season and share with global merchandising team as well as Japan HQ to influence future product offering and buys
  • Understand product trends, historical data and departmental input at category/class level in order to manage in-season opportunities or risks
  • Able to learn and understand Japanese consumers as well as brand aesthetics in order to create market appropriate product offerings and sorts at market appropriate timing
  • Understand competitive environment; proactively seek market knowledge through exposure to competitive retail outlets
  • Partner with Manager in developing performance and individual career goals
  • Prioritize and set expectations around key deliverables with cross-functional team and peers
  • Refresh website and update sorts
  • Manage QA for emails to ensure appropriate linking strategy and product stock


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1-2 years of retail buying experience
  • Experience as an Assistant Merchandiser, Assistant Buyer, or equivalent
  • Strong financial and analytical skills are a must
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Possess a working knowledge of financial measurements
  • Demonstrate a point of view about product assortment and business opportunities
  • Maintain a cooperative team environment that promotes high performance standards and attainment of goals
  • Demonstrate strong listening, verbal, written and presentation skills
