{"id":15610,"date":"2021-10-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-04T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aquent.com\/?p=15610"},"modified":"2021-10-04T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-10-04T09:00:00","slug":"where-to-from-here-with-web-accessibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aquent.com\/en-au\/blog\/where-to-from-here-with-web-accessibility","title":{"rendered":"Where To From Here With Web Accessibility?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you read my previous article for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquent.com.au\" title=\"Aquent Homepage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquent.com.au\/blog\/inclusive-design-is-the-process-accessibility-is-the-outcome\" title=\"Aquent Web Accessibility &amp; Inclusive Design Blog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">web accessibility and inclusive design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be wondering &lsquo;where to from here?&rsquo; with accessibility. Well, you&rsquo;re in luck &mdash; I recently had a long chat with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gianwild\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Gian Wild's LinkedIn Profile\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gian Wild<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about this exact topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&rsquo;s look at some key points to consider around moving forward with web accessibility in your organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Web accessibility policy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Policy varies from organisation to organisation, but when it comes to web accessibility, we need to clearly define a few things so everyone knows what to aim for. Let&rsquo;s look at what we need to include (at a minimum):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/WCAG21\/#cc1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Web Content Accessibility Guidelines - Level of Conformance Information\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">level <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of conformance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (this one should be easy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set a target around <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you will be able to get there (including milestones)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rules <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for success, e.g. writing requirements, the definition of done, and what is the testing procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define the key roles and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsibilities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including an accessibility champion (or champions) &#8211; someone who has the authority to police the policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a policy (even a draft or a version 1.0) in place, it can then be socialised with the team and the business broadly so that everyone is aware and knows what's involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Appoint an accessibility champion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that is challenging for web accessibility or inclusive design enthusiasts is having little to no responsibility or authority &mdash; which is often the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, I can encourage people and join in as many conversations as I can, but without any authority, I can't <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people make the right choices around accessibility. This leads to a lot of stuff going out the door without being properly tested or signed off in terms of accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we really need is an accessibility champion (sometimes called sponsor, owner, advocate etc.) who is ultimately responsible &mdash; a role where every feature needs to go through that person before it goes out the door. The champion should be involved in discussions, writing the requirements, be part of testing and so on. And if the feature does not meet the standard agreed to in the policy, there can be grown up conversations about why and the options available (e.g. remediate issues, wait for XYZ milestone).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Level playing field with onboarding<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Included in your policy should be accessibility onboarding. So often, I meet people who don&rsquo;t have accessibility on their radar or even understand the basics of why it's part of the discussion. We need to ensure everyone has at least taken an &lsquo;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/intro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Intro to Web Accessibility Page - WebAIM Website\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intro to web accessibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo; training and are starting from the same point &mdash; I suggest making this mandatory for all new team members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the number of people in your organisation or how often you have new starters, onboarding could be at set intervals (say every three months) where any newbies just join in on the next one in the calendar, or they can be ad-hoc as required, particularly if the format is online.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Learning, learning, learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building on the foundation of onboarding, there is always plenty to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverly.com.au\/web-accessibility-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Discoverly Website - Web Accessibility Training\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn about web accessibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some examples of the types of topics your team should consider are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An introduction to web accessibility (this should be part of onboarding)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to conduct an accessibility audit (also known as testing, assessment, or evaluation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible document authoring (PDFs and other document formats are often a sticking point for organisations and need specialist knowledge)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web accessibility for decision-makers (e.g. product owners, BAs, leadership)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing for accessibility (how to be more inclusive in your copywriting)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will find many of these covered in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thegymnasium.com\/accessibility\" title=\"Aquent Gymnasium Free Accessibility Training\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquent Gymnasium&rsquo;s free online training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to formal training, here are a couple of suggestions to help you bring your knowledge up:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setup a recurring (say fortnightly) session with the team to learn and discuss a different topic, to continually broaden the team's knowledge and keep accessibility in their minds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quickest way to uplift your team's working knowledge of web accessibility is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquent.com.au\/services\/digital-accessibility\" title=\"Aquent Digital Accessibility Services Info Page\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engage an expert to work with you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &mdash; someone &lsquo;on call&rsquo; who can bring their knowledge and experience, and advice to the table.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Be part of the accessibility roadmap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you have an old website, are building a new one, or are working through continuous improvements and new features, accessibility needs to be part of the roadmap. In my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquent.com.au\/blog\/inclusive-design-is-the-process-accessibility-is-the-outcome\" title=\"Chris Burke's Previous Article - Inclusive Design Is The Process, Accessibility Is The Outcome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I noted the concept of moving the conversation to the left (in the design cycle), and this is worth mentioning again. Inclusive design is not about bolting something on reactively (after the fact).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The earlier you can get accessibility into the conversation and be part of the planning and plan for success, the better.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your appointed accessibility champion(s) need to be in the loop\/part of the product roadmap discussions so that they can plan and contribute accordingly around how accessibility will be included as standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bring everyone on the accessibility journey<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My final thought, and a really important one in my experience, is to make sure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is involved &mdash; not one team or department, but all departments across the organisation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One client I work with has a mysterious marketing department responsible for writing content but never seem to be involved in the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everyone producing digital content &mdash; copywriting, visual design, development &mdash; all need to be part of the conversation when it comes to accessibility.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having one team hiding away doing their own thing will make success very difficult &mdash; and this applies to leadership also. Instead, make sure decision-makers have done the onboarding, are part of the conversation, and have an understanding of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we want to build better digital products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So where to from here?
