Your client is screaming for their new website, your staff is overloaded, and there is zero time to get your new web contractor up to speed. So how do you make the most of their time? Here are five tips to give your freelance web developer a running start.

Load up their laptop. Be sure they have the latest version of each app they’ll need to dive right into their work. Don’t forget the software needed for cross-browser testing, plus email and meeting maker tools.

Pass the torch. Deciphering someone else’s code, whether it’s a .NET framework or PHP, can be complex. To get your new web developer coding quickly, connect them with existing developers so they can quickly answer any questions and keep the project rolling. Or you might ask the dev team to create a wiki noting how and why the site was architected to get the new guy up to speed

Avoid hand-me-downs. It’s tempting to hand off that three-year old computer to the new web developer, but your web developer can’t use that old accounting PC! At the very least, be sure the computer’s been cleaned up and has the latest anti-virus software.

Tell them the secret password. Shared passwords (or badges for that matter) are the source of many a security nightmare. Be sure your developer has their own passwords the minute they come on board.

Avoid logo confusion. Be sure the developer has access to all the latest brand assets.

Web developers, we’d love to hear from you. What helps you to hit the ground running on a new assignment?
